Tests I've seen have the iPod putting out extremely clean audio, bordering on audiophile levels of signal/noise ratio. If I get bored enough I might do a signal comparison between my nano and my W900. I'm fairly sure I know what's gonna win though due to the lesser amounts of interfering circuitry.

Is the native USB interface on the phone only 1.1 or is it just really slow USB2? Doesn't transfer data to onboard memory anywhere near as fast as my ipod nano. USB 1 should be able to transfer data at a bit over 1 Megabyte/second at full speed. My file transfers to my W900 are about half that, so nowwhere near USB 2 speed. What speed do people get? Maybe it's just my setup.
That vapulus site is brilliant.
USB 1.1 is 12Mbps, USB 2 480Mbps. I get about 3Mbps on my K750 usb cable connection. It is USB2, but the speed is limited by SE's serial port implementation.

I have the K800i and I have to say the iPod blows it away as a media device; it has a killer feature though. I'm assuming the Walkmen series phones software is similar, but this post is really about K800 vs iPod.
Its good *enough*, and its portable. 90% of the time I carry around just the K800 with a 1gb m2 memory stick; when I know I want music or a movie I take the iPod.
The hardware on the K800 seems fine for what it does, but the software is just not up to iPod standards yet; try to use the K800 to watch a long movie. You can only see the fastforward progress bar in portrait mode, but need to watch in landscape mode as thats the screen ratio content is made in. You can't jump to a particular time code in the film. The player doesnt remember where you were in the film if you stop watching it for any reason (end of journey, etc). Worse still, the joystick will bump you out of the film and into your playlist, as will overlong presses on the volume keys. In landscape mode no user interface elements are displayed, so you cant see what volume level you're at, where in the film you've reached, and so on.
So; you have a 1hour 30m film to watch on your commute; you dont want to take the iPod. But the phone is prone to knocking you out of the film, and makes you fast forward randomly around to get back into it. Strike 1; its fine for small music videos, but not really as a proper media player, to watch episodes of TV, etc. Simply remembering your last position in a film and offering to resume play at that point would make it SO much less frustrating to watch.
Strike 2; The K800 headphones are *rubbish*, and the lack of a standard headphone port in the box adapter means you're stuck with them. 3rd party headphone adapters mean you start to lose the snazzy phone functionality with a mike inline + smooth interruptions to your music, etc.
Strike 3; The K800 software doesnt have the playlist management functionality of the ipod, the ability to preference certain songs to play more often, or as intuitive an interface for control without looking. I can use my ipod without looking at it when in the gym etc, because the wheel is so large and tactile. I have to stop, and look at the phone to do it with the K800.
Strike 4; 1gb max capacity. Its Just Too Small, and the snail like transfer speed makes updating it painful.
If you need a phone anyway and cant afford both, get a new S/E. If you want a 'best of class' media player, though, the iPod is still better. The k800 though; its 3g internet, camera, phone, lots of things the iPod doesnt do. Its a good phone too; the UI is fast and responsive and my signal strength is great. You need to decide why you want the device
If anyone knows of ways to resolve the 'last played point' or 'UI in landscape mode' issues in media player I'd love to know, by the way

@SockToy: I'll have to defend the other side. The SE phones have quite a few music player features the iPod doesn't:
1) Custom EQs
2) Full editing of playlists on the device itself.
3) Putting music on the phone doesn't require special software, so you can do it on public (internet cafe, library) computers.
4) FM Radio
5) Streaming radio/streaming video
6) A2DP/wireless headphones
