i changed the housing and everything was working BUT 2 problems; the phone does now not charge and the mic doesnt work either i.e i can hear the other person but they cant hear me

People have done it yes..

but afaik you are left with a little gap between the screen and the case as the sirocco screen is larger than that of the normal 8800

I haven't done it as I got a sirocco instead but there have been people that have done it and yes I have seen it..
