My k700i joystick went around the 11thmonth mark;
Not a problem as in the 12th month I always get an upgrade.
My k750i has now started to go in the 10th Month of ownership;
Not to worry as I know it will last till the next upgrade.
Seems to me that under normal circumstances the joysticks will just about make it through the year. I actually mountainbike, do a lot of DIY and use the phone heavily so it is exposed to a lot of dust, grit and grime.
I dont see the point in a phone lasting more than a year as by the 12th month the screen is usually scratched and the case a little worn. Its that reason I refuse to ever have an 18 month contract.
Those that say the joysticks go too quickly really need to look into their lifestyle as if you are surrounded by that much dust and dirt then your too skanky to own a SE
Seriously if you subject your phone to sitting in some dust filled pocket then have such little life as to spend hours on easy/boring mobile games twiddling away on the joystick...you deserve a broken phone. Likewise if you can not be bothered to clean it or look after.....you deserve a broken phone.
Perhaps there is a market for mobile phone servicing. Regular services to clean out dust and dirt. Make the lazy people pay for it!!

bare in mind tho the w950 as well will have no joystick, its touchscreen so this could pave the way!! Just wondering has there been a mainstream nokia with a touchscreen, i know there was a big ugly brute of a phone they brought out last year, cant remember, but it looked hideous!!!!

Agree.
These extreme users of joysticks should just recognise that it's they who need the dpad, not other users. Many people probably love the joystick and never have a problem, yet SE is supposed to change all phones to dpads because a few peeps have a 12 hours a day mobile phone habbit?
If you want to use a phone that much, then you know what to do - buy a phone with a dpad. No need for any petition (I certainly ain't signing it).
Two simple things:
1. Keep your stick clean (but no need to be uptight about it)
2. Buy a phone with Dpad instead if you expect to handle your stick 6 hours a day or more.

I had problems with my K700i joystick after about a year. It was also quite sharp and uncomfortable to use.
My V800 d-pad is much better.
And no I don't play mobile games or have a 12 hour per day text habit.

..not just SE's.....
.....either way(I prefer joysticks, 'only' clean mine every 6 months, works fine on my year old W800), it's surely good that the manufacturer offers both solutions across it's model range? AFAIK, Samsung, for example, ONLY offer D-pads...

Exactly, it's a trade off. Atleast with SE there is choice. I prefer joysticks, and my K joystick has needed overhauling once in twelve months, which I do using electronic contact cleaner (see my
tute)
Anything with a mechanical component will need some type of servicing sometime in it's life to extend the service life. Cars, computers, dvd players (head cleaning), all need to be "maintained". I don't find it such a hard thing to accept that a phone joystick would be the same. I certainly don't waste too much time blaiming SE about it.
The joystick will need servicing a lot less freguently if the phone is cased and carried on your belt and not in a pocket or handbag, but if you don't want to carry it on your belt, get a K610 or W810 for example, phones which incidently are much better looking phones and deserve to be uncased anyway.
If you desire a joystick, then you should either case your phone or else put up with the more frequent servicing required to keep it in working order. I still can't see any need for a petition, infact I will start a petition to encourage SE to retain the use of joysticks on the imaging phones if this other petition get's off the ground.
