Absolutly hate the iPOD. Bad sound, prone to scratches, poor battery life.

I really dont think you guys are getting it.

You see there a millions of people with 20gb + mp3 players

yeh the amount of people using phones is going up, but w800i playing music for a few hours, then some phone calls and then text messages... dbout the battery would last a day.

There is currently nothing coming in the near future whaich can facliitate most sers needs. Possibly the few people who use ipod nanos (hence the apple phone) but for the people who have anything over 2 gb of music and possibly want to watch some videos or graphics is not guna hack it.

They also say a k800i can replace a camera, in truth it cant, its not comparable to my 4 year old nikon 2100 which was a 2mpx

the only way they could do it is using the new vertical optical technology and making the phones bigger, which is not something I want

Studies, polls and analysts are all moot.

The iPod does what it does while a phone does what it is designed to do. Bottom line. I go through new phones every three months. The longest I have kept a phone is my Nokia 9300i and this is only because the P990 does not support 802.11G. However, I have had my 60 iPod since they came out 10 months ago. I use my k800i (soon to get rid of when something else comes out) as just a knock about phone. Nothing special but my iPod is where I see true value.

I think you guys need to remember that hardly any people including me change there phones every 3 months considering how many mobile users there are!! So they have a walkman phone for 12 to 18 months which they find more useful and conveniant then there Ipod as they only need one device, hence the increase in users.
Sure they may keep there Ipods but in the back of a draw.

Negative. I use my iPod everyday. Everyday. I use it when I drive to and from work, when I go down to the mall or out to the ocean. The only time I use my k800i as a music player is when I hit the treadmill or if do training out by the ocean and then I use the armbanded ICE-25 (think that is the case). The main use for my k800i as well as my w800, w810 (both gone already) was to make phone calls. Nice devices but in terms of capacity, and functionality, the iPod wins hands down.

I realized I posted in haste so I will clarify. As for changing phones every three months (only SE will do), to be honest, I do it because I can, but only if there is something out that I like and will suit my needs. I do not change for the sake of change which is why I never bought the k750i. Same goes for computers as well. I change them every 6 months if Apple releases a new model.

What I meant was you cannot compare yourself to millions of other users, lot's of people probably don't see the need for there ipod if they have a phone that play's music. You lucky to have so much money and be a techy geek as well. I would do the same as you if I had the money but as the article shows there are millions of others that do want to use there phones instead of there ipods because it's more conveniant.
I doubt the Ipod will die but it will find it much tougher in th future to get new customers when all the phones will be able to play music.

Exactly.

In this debate we have to be careful not to turn it into an either/or argument. For people who desire, for whatever reason, more than 2GB (soon 4GB) of music on their person, the ipod or some other large capacity device is the best option.

There are lot's of people who like to carry bulk music. There are many more who just want a few hundred songs with them for whom a limited capacity but convergent device is a more suitable choice than a dedicated player.

I agree.

If a phone can play mp3s what is it really doing that a dedicated player can't.

Well, for one thing can it hold 60 gigs worth of music? I have my entire music collection on my iPod. Sure it can play music and make calls but the fact remains: one down, two in the shop. If your music playing phone breaks, you have lost two devices where as I still have my phone that can play music. At the end of the day, media phones will not kill iPods or the other devices. They will be seen as an augmentation device.
