There's been talk of this phone for an eternity. Part of the problem is that every time a company files for a Patent or Trademark some tech site goes into rumor overload. Never mind that it can take upwards of 2 years to be awarded a Patent and maybe even longer to build the product (the current wait time for Patent approval is 26 months, I filed for a patent in May and that is what I was sent).
In the mean time I was shopping for a new GSM phone and was forced to buy the w810i (because there's no iPhone yet and the k790 isn't Quad-band). It's a really decent phone but comes nowhere near the level of design perfection that Apple usually builds. There are many very subtle differences that Apple considers when designing products and TONS of usability test they must go through before being released. That's what sets Apple apart from companies like Sony, Sony only gets 90% of the product done before they release it (why no quad-band on k790? why is Walkman app always orange? why a solid light instead of a flash on the w810i? why no lens cover on w810i camera? Why do I have an unremovable "PlayNow" link on the main menu that doesn't do anything? why is there a custom shortcut menu that will only let you make shortcuts to the Main Menu? In case you wanted to use more clicks to get to the same place?). It's good, just not good enough. (as a long time Apple user, I can say that no, they are not "always" perfect, just very often)
And talk of "Apple stuff is soooo expensive" is just rubbish. My w810i was $400 at an online discounter ($599 at the Sony Store) and when comparing computers, try comparing EXACT configurations, not just the cheapest of them all. Apple computers are very competitive in todays higher end computer marketplace and even cheaper than Dell in some cases. (I currently have a Powerbook and a very nice HP DV1000 as well as several Desktops from Apple and others). The difference is motivation. Apple buyers historically try to find the best computer to do the job and Windows users try to find the cheapest computer do do the job.
To each his own though, when Apple releases the iPhone, I will try very hard to resist buying it initially but I guess it depends on wether my w810i is still kicking strong. (and whether the iPhone sucks)
edit: sorry, should have stated I purchased my w810i a while back, before Cingular carried it, I couldn't wait any longer for Apple or Cingular to get a decent phone. Of course, the w810i is cheaper now.

@Rhett, well said. However your w810 is WAY too expensive. That $400 is what we paid months ago in $CAN Currency about 3 months before Cingular Wireless debuted and we got the 1GB card to boot.
> However I keep seeing mock ups for the iPhone with OSX wont happen.

Hon Hai cops to iPhone contract
engadget
It looks like a certain little Taiwanese manufacturer is going to get a stern talking to pretty soon from our pal Stevie J.. Just last month, Han Hai (aka Foxconn) spilled the beans in regards to a 15-inch MacBook, and while of course nothing has been confirmed by the suits at Apple, that rumor has been reiterated by this juicy new iPhone story. Apparently Hon Hai has now secured a contract with Apple to manufacture 12 million mobile handsets with music player functionality, sez the Commercial Times. The phone (which sounds like an iPhone if we ever heard of one) is purportedly set to launch in the first half of next year, giving rise to hopes that Apple will announce the handset at Macworld Expo in January. As for the MacBook, contrary to the May 2007 ship date we heard for the 15-inch MacBooks earlier, Hon Hai could be delivering these things as early as next month.
