I'll try putting on the maps again to see if it'll help routing.

The reason it can't get a lock in 30 seconds is because it uses A-GPS. Unless your N95 has some super secret chip set in it, you might be misrepresenting your results. An easy test would be to post some photos. 30 seconds after the start. I have a Garmin GPSMap 60CSx with a SIRF Star III chipset, and it takes about 45 to get a lock. The chipset in the N95 is no where as good, as the SIRF Star III. You see my point here?

Do you consider a satellite capture as a lock? A lock constitutes 4 satellites. Just in case you did not know.

Sapporo I don't know if you are confused with other people's posts but my main issue is with routing through the proper roads... you recommended redownloading the maps for that...

Why are you bringing up locking on faster? It was another member who said they can lock in in 20 seconds or something...

@Falcon, lol I'm sorry I didn't, it was past midnight so would've been too dark anyway

I am not confused about anything in this thread. I have a very good grasp about GPS and its functionality. I also know how the GPS in the N95 works. Its flaws, its strengths. With that being said, I answered your post about the maps as I have read in different forums that reloading the maps can help. Do it, don't do it. It's up to you.

Second, I was correcting an inaccuracy that might lead others to think something contrary to the functioning of their GPS in the N95. Military grade GPS, and I know from using them, don't get a lock in 20 seconds. Anyone that thinks this is well, wrong. With that I am out of this thread. Good luck. Hope your maps works.I have nothing more to say or to add.

P.S. You might want to ask Kingbooker about why he is bringing up antenna placement as well.

I appreciate your help but I don't know if it's me or not, However you seem condecending.

I said there might be a problem with routing.
You said try redownloading the maps
I said thanks I'll try that
You said The reason it can't get a lock in 30 seconds is because it uses A-GPS. (but I didn't say anything about that).
I said Are you confused with what I said?
You said Do it, don't do it. It's up to you.

Perhaps you strongly support the N95 and are defending it. I don't know.

For me, I don't side with any mobile. I go by what a product says on the tin and how it is advertised.

Sadly I've had some bad experience with the phone's GPS and I thought I'd share it (just as I shared my positive experiences with the phone in my review).

For those that don't know why the antenna is under the keypad, it's simple. IMO thre is no other place to put it because if it was on the screen section, it would make it thicker. The screen slide is very slim!

I hope that there will be a better GPS chip or (sirf III as sapporo said) in future models and/or there will be an antenna 'extention'.

Sadly for now, I'll have to rely on www.theaa.com to ensure a smooth and quick path.

I just came back to edit my post but being that you got here first I will try to explain it one last time.

My comments about the lock times were made to Falcon and Falcon only. They had nothing to do with you. I only jumped in with this because he said something that is not possible with ANY GPS device.

As for condescending, I don't have time to talk down to anyone. I give the facts as I have them. It is up to anyone here to use them or not. This is your choice. You came here for info, I gave it without prejudice. I mentioned that the N95 uses A-GPS but this depends on your area if it is implemented or not. A-GPS stands for Assisted GPS and depends on if your network operator implements it. If so, you should get better accuracy, if not then you will get normal GPS accuracy.

The antenna was put under the keypad because the GPS was added as a late entry. Nokia decided after most of the phone was designed. For all intent purposes, the antenna could be located under the keypad if the N95 had a better chip set. It wouldn't be thicker locating it near the screen because that section is pretty much hollow but, there could have been interference from the radios. My friend at Nokia didn't confirm this but he smiled when I asked this question.

Bottom line. You pay your money, you take your chances. GPS for the most part unless you are using military grade stuff is about a 97% technology. If it gets you to the ballpark, great. If it gets you inside to your seat, even better. I hope this explains this better.
