To reduce the over brightness effect you can hold the phone with a finger near the light sensor, the flash will be less stronger in short distance, otherwise it will look white.

Hi!
I just bought K850 and having the same issue with the damn flash, whenever I'm trying to take a portrait of myself (tried Auto with ISO 100, no help there) the phone seems trying to make me blind with the damn flash. The firmware is updated to R1EA031 and is the latest according to SEUS, my phone is Swedish so i guess it's a localized issue since the 37 isn't marked as latest in SEUS (for me at least).
I tried covering the light sensor, the pictures becomes more decent to look at but the focus is completely off, though the "lamp" lights my hand up in order to focus - it's still off the track. I've noticed the "Portrait in Dark" is the only decent one-click-away mode to at least get a good picture, I'f im lucky with the noise.

I dont think the problem is in not understanding how to use a camera, the K850 always overexposes when using the flash.
Here is the same pics took with a canon sd850 on 5mp setting
and here is the K850
My K800 never used to do this, i have just given up when it comes to this camera and close up with the flash

Seems i've to go on with my K810 instead then, unless a firmware fix the damn flash.

Flash is not meant to be used for close ups, and instead of using perfects tip why not turn the flash off?

@thomas. there you wrong, if you flash works like it should, it very good for close up pics.
first of all, uppdate your k850 to latest firmware . 037, (it have better synchronize of the flash. old firmware is worse). then use document (in macro) or auto + iso.100 on portrait.
took this some days ago, quite good i think

Taking good macro flash pictures with k850 is very hard especially if the object is white.
For me the best firmware was the 029 that came with the phone and R1CA037 for pictures.
here is a picture i took with R1CA0137
I had to decrease Exposure to -2.0
