Well I've just turned my PC from 24 bits (doesn't support 32 bit color) to 16 bit and I honestly can't tell the difference. BTW, my K790a's screen really kicked ass when it was released, but any new SE can definitely beat it in brightness, including the ones that aren't even QVGA, like the W610.
Change to 16 bits when you have on-screen a picture with a large surface filled with a gradient. Like a picture with some part of it showing a clear sky.
You will then see several distinct bands of blue. Go back to 24 bits and the bands will disappear.
By the way, almost no screen is capable of true 32 bits color. Moreover, in a PC, 32 bits color adds only 8 bits of transparency to the usual 24 bits of color. So, it does not add anything to the number of colors.

@ mischka, you seem to be very knowledgeable. I agree what you are saying, for the widescreen 15" or 17" monitor. But I cannot agree on many other ways. I cannot be persuaded that N95 is giving better user experience then K850i taking screen into consideration, or Moto A1200 for that matter. (Please, I do not compare the phones as they are, or saying which one is better in overall, just that I have these three modern samples of each color representation)
As far as I know, SE did a great job developing further their existing equipment. K850i, if anything, has a great display.

Enough about the theory. Let's compare.
Both phones are rather new in term of release date so it's quite fair to compare both.
K770 (1.9", 256k color screen, TFT) Vs 6120 Classic (2", 16M color screen, TFT) - all set to maximum brightness.
K770 is always on the LEFT side
All the colors (black, white, red, green, blue) are obviously better in K770. K770 wins easily in term of brightness as well.
But interesting fact is K770's is
not even the best display from SE yet. S500 is better.
S500 (similar to W580) - K770
In case you think my review is biased, I'm not the only one who reviewed this kind of thing.
W580 - U600 (both are TFT 256k colors)
see W580 Vs U600, then see this:
U600 - N95 (TFT 256k Vs TFT 16M)
W580 - W910 (both are TFT 256k colors)
N95 - N95 8GB
and don't ever conclude anything if you compare those 16M screens with
K800. coz K800 display is WAY behind newest SE:
S500 - M600 - K800
viewing angle??
don't worry..
latest SE phones do the best:
Open your eyes please.. It's obvious that SE
latest displays are superb in term of brightness, saturation, contrast, viewing angle, direct sunlight view.
Now tell me what is so special about those 16M color screens?
You don't have to envy those Nokias' 16M color screens. Really.
As for me, I'd rather have a 256k color screen SE phone than a 16M color screen Nokia phone.

Hey nice stuff mate. Just a small correction: You have written that the W580i and W910i have 16 million colour screens, just above the picture of them both. I'm sure most people can work it out, but just in case

First of all it is not 256k it is 262k colors and second of all i don't envy nokia screens i just want SE to have a 16M colors screen.
And believe me the diference is noticeable now (try watching videos and you will notice the need for increase in color depth)and it becomes more noticeable as you increase the size and resolution of the screen. 16M colors on the Xperia1 (3 inch -wvga) would have been a killer. that is what i expected from what
calls "the ultimate media" device.

with
current screen quality, they could easily replace the numbers 262k with 16m with ease, i see no difference when spotting a W960i color and a N95

@tonchy
Pls don't get me wrong.
Actually, the post I made was for them who said Nokia's display is better because they are 16M colors. The truth is, they are not even better at all than SE's - even when they are 16M colors and SE is 'just' 256k colors.
So my point will be.. 16M color screen doesn't guarantee anything. The quality itselff will depend on the manufacturer itself.
But of course, I also agree with you, if SE put some 16M color screen on its display, of course without any doubt it will be better than SE's 256k color screens.. and most of all, it will be the ultimatum since SE's display is always one of the best.
I also expect one or two from SE, of course.
