Sony is quite behind Canon and Nikon in dslrs. Of the two you're better off with the Canon. Having said that though, I used to be a Canon man myself until I tried the Nikon D200. I ended buying it and I don't seem to be that interested in Canon anymore. Do also try out the Nikon D900 and see which appeals to you.

I think it will be the Canon Eos 450d(I think I have made up mind now)
Nice one. I have a 450D and while I admit I don't know a hell of a lot about cameras, I can pretty much guarantee you won't be disappointed with it.

Not meaning to say you're wrong or anything, but I was at my local camera shop the other day talking to the most expert guy there, he told me that Sony was generally pretty up there in terms of technology, and comparing to an equivalent Canon, you're paying several hundred dollars less. Dunno how much truth there is in that though.

If image quality is your thing, buy a 450D body only and a Canon 50mm f1.4 lens, or the 17-85mm IS USM (Depending how and what you shoot) and start from there, you will not be disappointed. Kit lenses are a waste of money - buy good glass.
I prefer to go by dpreview as far as camera equipment reviews go it is top notch

The winner is obviously the Canon, and this mostly due to the difference between CMOS and CCD sensors I believe, the Sony has higher res and built in Steadyshot, the Canon better image quality at higher ISO so higher shutter speeds can be used to reduce camera shake
The Sony can utilise Minolta AF lenses (Sony bought Minolta out and rebadged their technology and use their propietrary Alpha mount)

Right today is the day I am off to buy the camera if I am honest I still don't know which one I am going to get. I was pretty much decided it would be either the Canon or the Sony but my brother in law has just bought the Nikon d60 and hasn't stopped going on about how good it is.

Just a bit of an update i bought the a350 and instead of the Macbook i bought a Vaio also. I had always been happy with my a200 and i know that a lot of people voted for Canon, but i guess i was just happy with the Alpha range.
... And also i got such a good price for the Camera and the Vaio it would have ben criminal to refuse it
