Let's get our Memory Sticks straight.

First, there was Memory Stick. Then there was Memory Stick Duo, which is simply Memory Stick shrunk down into a smaller package. Except for the physical size, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Duo are exactly the same.

Due to an inherent limitation in the original Memory Stick design, no Memory Stick will ever have a capacity of more than 128MB. This is impossible. Since Memory Stick and Memory Stick Duo are the same, this limitation applies to both.

Because they are the same thing, any Memory Stick Duo stick will work in any Memory Stick device, possibly with the adapter to make it fit. Any Memory Stick would work in a Memory Stick duo device, if it weren't too big.

Sony have done two different things to address this limitation in the Memory Stick design.

First, they invented what they call the "memory select" function. What they do, essentially, is stick two separate 128MB modules into one single Memory Stick, with a "memory select" switch to change between the two. You get two separate 128MB memory banks, and you have to remove the card and flip the switch to change between them. Any Memory Stick (note: *not* Memory Stick Pro; read on) larger than 128MB uses this "memory select" switch.

There are currently 256MB Memory Sticks (with memory select) on the market. To the best of my knowledge, there is not yet any such Memory Stick Duo.

Second, they designed a new format called Memory Stick Pro. Memory Stick Pro can go far beyond 128MB, and is currently available in sizes up to 1GB. Newer hardware is Memory Stick Pro compatible, and such hardware is also backwards compatible with Memory Stick sticks. However, older Memory Stick devices are *not* compatible with Memory Stick Pro sticks.

The P800 is *not* Memory Stick Pro compatible.

So: there will never be a true 256MB card available for the P800, because it is simply impossible for there to be a true 256MB Memory Stick. They will probably release a 256MB stick with "memory select" at some point, but that's a cheap workaround at best.

@peregrinum

Please look here and see an in depth discussion on the subject.

My conclusion is: MS Pros can run on Serial (as well as Paralell) interfaces.

All the P800 needs to take MS Duo Pros is a firmware update. This may or may not happen. The hardware will work.

Also: I have a couple of brand new, unopened 128MB Memory Stick Duo sticks in London. I'll sell them for £85, including postage. No hidden shipping costs, no unexpected customs duties, you'll have it the next day. Email me if interested.

So the real reason the 256mb Duo Pro "won't" work then!...has anyone actually tested them in a P800?!

yes, people have tested memory stick pro's, they dont work.

the memory stick duo pro is just a smaller version, therefore wont work either without a firmware upgrade.

some people just dont get it....!
