Buying the phone Unlocked has worked out the best for me. I’m sure it would for most here if they considered it. I get unlimited GPRS for $20 USD flat fee. I am not under contract with my carriers (T-MO -USA, Cingular- USA, Vodophone UK, Ben NL/T-MO NL) so I can drop them anytime I please to without paying a penalty fee. Better yet I can stop using the phone for x amount of days/weeks/months with one carrier and not have to pay them for the duration that I didn’t use their service. Where as contract payers must always make their monthly payments regardless of usage.

So buying the P800 in late January of 2003 for a bit over $1k USD and the P900 in late October for over $1.5K USD I have the flexibility of switching from sim card to sim card whenever/wherever I travel. I have paid the cost upfront, but I can sell the phone at anytime without the constraints of sim lock and logo branding. The added benefit I get over contract buyers is not having a stupid carrier logo on my phone and not having to commit to any contract terms and fees. Contract buyers would have to lower their monthly plans after x amount of months (per contract terms) just to feel like they haven’t overspent on the contract plan + cost of phone. However, I don’t think one would realistically want to sacrifice their minutes just to not feel like they didn’t overpay for buying the phone cheap with a high rate plan over a 12 month period. With all that said I don't think I was as crazy as much reported to spend on a mobile phone.

I was talking to a sales guy at onestop earlier today (I'm considering putting them on my speed dial the amount of times I've called them since last Wednesday). He told me their first supply of P900s comes in tomorrow and will be despatched either Tuesday or Wednesday depending on what time they arrive coz they have to connect them to Orange. He also told me they aren't getting enough in to cover all their pre-orders so some people who've only just ordered might have to wait enough week...

Does anyone know if the Orange branded version is crippled in anyway (revised firmware etc)?

I ordered mine a 2am on Sunday morning, and have been told Wednesday for a delivery. I sincerely hope that they are not wasting my time and I'll be ringing them tomorrow to say I'm expecting it then.

@BigFeat

I agree that buying SIM free is a lot more flexible, but here in the UK in order to get service you must commit to a 12 month minimum contract with a carrier and pay a monthly fee (assuming you don't want the hastle of pay as you go that is).

Also, $1500usd is roughly £900gbp and even if I stayed on the high tarrif (which I wont) for my full 12 month commitment the phone will only cost me £69 + 12x£50 = £669gbp or $1,117usd, and of course that isn't paid up front (I will have a P900 after spending £69).

It's a sad state of affairs here in 'Rip Off Britain' that it's cheaper for me to tear up a contract I've had for 2 years and start a new one with the same carrier (or maybe another carrier) on a different number than it is to ugrade my phone on my current contract.

Orange UK wanted £299 for me to upgrade to a P900 whilst my new contract offers me the same for £69.

Shouldnt tell ya this but you should be able to drop the plan as soon as you walk out of the door!
Unless on the contract you signed it STATED that you cant.
They only say this to stop you doing it as they will lose their commision on the sale.

Trust me. I know!!!
