@davieboy
Yeah, im pretty sure all the major networks own a license. I know Orange do for a fact, having worked there for a while.
And yes you're right... the networks have realised that lots of the services offered by 3G are possible with the good old GSM networks.
I think the data speed offered by 3G is from around 300kb/sec, but EDGE technology allows well over 100kb/sec on a normal network. OK, so it isnt quite as fast, but I saw a demo a few months back where ericsson had video streaming working on a GSM network.

It is not unusual that people makes silly phone calls when they are drunk that they are ashamed of later on. With 3G they can now also immortalize the happening as a picture or video record.

Sorry I know this is off topic again
But
@ukchalky - 100 kb/s, that is plenty I mean at the moment mobiles aren't at the stage where they have gb's of space to store lots of data so what is the point of a ultrafast broadband like connection on 3g networks when the phones are not yet ready. Plus that 100kb/s, do we really need much faster that that anyway!!! I mean my internet connection on my pc is 128kb/s but I only get about 28 kb/s out of that in real terms but even so I aren't waiting at all for webpages and downloads are way faster compared to modem so I odn't really see what benefit 300 kb/s would be on a mobile execpt to big businesses.

Yeah, i agree. 100kb/s is fine for me! But technology must move on at some point! We'd still all be watching black and white TVs if old technology was never replaced!!
Anyway.. roll on 3G, and roll on Z1010. Best looking 3G phone by a long way imho!

Hmm.. first of all we're talking about kbit/s not kb/s (kb=kilobyte). That's a major difference.
Current UMTS networks have a theoretical max of 384kbit/s. I don't know the exact max for EDGE but it's a bit lower. The difference though is that the UMTS networks will support 2Mbit/s with an upgrade (and there has also been som talk about 14Mbit/s at a later stage).
Secondly you'll have to keep in mind that the total amount of transfered data (voice or datapackets) that the UMTS networks can handle is way above what GSM networks can handle. Many GSM networks are heavily loaded already toady. Therefore the UMTS network has a clear edge in the not so very distant future. UMTS will take over the GSM market in a couple of years. Maybe with the optional GSM/EDGE usage in low-population areas.
Davieboy, you are talking about what is available today, but that's not the point... UTMS/3G will have better phones just wait about a year. You have to start somewhere, there is no point in bringing out 3G phones before the networks is built. When all major operators launch their 3G services the phones will come. And this will most likely happen during this year.

Will it happen this year, I hear what your saying about it being better, but near enough 90% of the people I know don't know what 3g networks are or anything about them and I don't know anyone who is even interested in making video calls or video clips. I think it will be a long time for mms takes off so I can't see this being the year for 3G personally. I mean I honestly don't know anyone who has used mms yet, I have it on my T610 and my friend has it on his z600 and I have another friend who has a siemens with it on but none of us have ever used it and just stick to text.

Sure, but the fact is that people don't have to know that they are buying a 3G mobile. Lot's of people have bought MMS/GPRS phones without even using it. Most people buy the phones because they likes the apperance not for functions.
One of the reasons for MMS to not take off is beacause it's a techonolgy which has only existed for a small period of time. Give it some time and it might be the next sms thing. Stuff like this takes time, it needs a certain market penetration before it can take of hugely. It's not like sms was popular from day one. It took several years before it took off. But I'm certain people will look what phones are available and they will not care what if it's a GSM phone or a 3G phone.

Will people pay so much extra though? I mean 3 in the UK isn't cheap compared to your average pay and go gsm network or contract. I agree that people go for looks in a phone but will they pay extra on a contract just for looks when they can get another phone for alot cheaper contract deal. I agree with what you say about mms, people buy it and don't know what it is. But my point is, sms is fairly cheap and quick - you just type your message and thats it, it can be used in most situations. MMS I have never used once, it is not cheap and I have played about with it a bit on my T610 and it is not quick. My point being it isnt usefull 90% of the time sms is near enough 100% of the time. What I am getting at is will people pay so much more to be on 3G and will they use the services when a plain old sms still does the job fine. I mean do you really need to be sending pictures and sounds just to tell someone your going to be a bit late.
