Hmmmm, interesting forum! I have to admit I'm really against the EU being more than simply close trading partners.
Each country in the EU has it's own national identity, customs, dialects and eccentricities that would be lost if we became some big European superstate. If it did happen, I could see something similar to what happened in Yugoslavia over a decade ago with everyone deciding they wanted independance for their own state, and a 'civil war' breaking out, especially if they continue to try to 'harmonise' everything to one standard. There's been a lot of press over the years in the UK about the 'meddling' EU doing ludicrous things like trying to ban bananas that are a bit too curved, regulation lengths for cucumbers, and so on! It's both funny and scary at the same time!
I like the fact there's so many differences between nations, variety being the spice of life, and so on.
On the other hand, if every country in Europe clubbed together, we could become a global hyperpower like the US and give them a run for their money in international and cultural affairs.... maybe even beat them at a few things!
Don't think I'd like the price for that happening though...

@bobafett - bad example I chose I guess, but I hope I got the point across! If we went down the 'united states of europe' path I could see problems in the future when countrie's national identities get eroded by bureaucrats (have I spelt that right? sorry if I haven't!!).

Yes, I can't help thinking that if this war/crisis etc. was handled by someone a bit less gung-ho and used their brains a bit more (Sorry US and to an extent, our UK government, but it's probably true!) and things were more sensitively handled, I'm sure that we wouldn't be having all the problems in Iraq that we are at the moment. Whilst no one would deny that Saddam was evil and had to go, this was not really the way to do it.
