Use the strap when your phone is in your hand, never ever attach it to your belt. Anyone who needs the strap attached to their belt should probably have their mother with them to hold their hand.

i use a neck strap i keep my p900 in my pocket,and when i use my phone in public i wrap the strap roound my hand hay presto now the phone wont fall or get robbed out of my hand.
