I think - just give it some time - wait a couple of weeks until youve been through several chargecycles - and then see if it does not get better.
I just checked my phone again after doing a litle bluetoothing on it - transfered a few files - and it still shows a full battery.
At first when I got mine 2 weeks ago - the batterymeter also went down very fast - first day down to the last block - but still lasted most of the second day on that last block.
Now it feels much better after Ive used the phone and done some full recharges.

Well after charging mine all night and then playing on it today a little, making a few texts and making one 3 minute phone call, the battery is now dead! Im in the process of recharging it (again) - it better pick up because this is poor!

One word... Li-ion. You'll find it on the back of your battery pack and it's the reason Nokias have a poor battery life and that problem if you charge them if they're not run out. Its also the reason the new iPod's batteries fail after 2 years. This technology, although recetly improved and lifetime made better still can give quirky readings and off charging sequences. However, I must say the Sony Li-ion batteries are the best of them all

.
Youre probably used to a Lithium Polymer battery if you had a previous Sony Ericsson, I know my old T610 does.
I believe that SE are releasing a Li-Polymer battery for the K700i, I know i'll buy it as soon as it comes out.
I'm a believer in criticism, please correct me if i'm wrong!
