symbian OS was originally made for small handheld devices (like palms).
Smartphones are a new recent devices that use it too...

Hey
I got P900 and Z1010. i dont understand why SE choosed not 2 use and develope their own special OS for Z1010 (which is not a simple OS, it comes with multi tasking and many similar things to the Symbian) and didnt took Symbian like Nokia 6630? is it becouse the video conference capebilities ?
Any way their new OS for Z1010 (which is based on older OS but still very advanced) is impressive (but full of bugs

Yes it's riduculous for SE to license Nokia's Series 60 interface, spending $$$$$$$$$$$$, and therefore being dependent of Nokia (does Windows/Microsoft/Internet Explorer ring a bell to you?)

are you saying that s60 is just a notch or so above k700? In terms of user experience and satisfaction, I mean.
That's largely subjective to personal preferences. Every OS and interface has pros and cons, so use what makes you happy.

OK. Explaining:
There are two things in terms of software: Operating Systems and Interfaces.
Symbian is an Op System. Nokia is using Symbian 6.1 only (for now) in it's 7650, 3650, 6600, etc, and SE is using Symbian 7.0 in its Px00 series.
Now Series 60 is an Interface made by Nokia to use over Symbian 6.1, UIQ is an Interface made by UIQ to use over Symbian 7.0.
Series 40 is a Nokia interface for use over Nokia's own Op System, not Symbian.
I'm explaining a bit more...
Nokia uses Symbian OS v6.1 in 3600, 3620, 3650, 3660, 7650, N-Gage and N-Gage QD.
Symbian OS v7.0s is used in 6260, 6600, 6620, 7610 and 9500.
Symbian OS v8.0 is used in 6630.
Nokia 9210/9290 uses Symbian OS v6.0

Symbian UIQ rocks only p800 and p900 have used it effectivley although Motorola have used it to some effect but the phone was hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee A950 i think also Nokia are using it on their latest media handset called Taco express i.
No Nokia does not own Symbian, they just own 49% which doesn't mean ownership. Check this article. Most P*00 owners will love this one.
