Putting some thoughts into it..I would say that low end phones are one's which every common person can use...India is a gr8 market for cell phones..I don't know why whiz..You find the market tooo expensive..Maybe you don't get good deals.
Nokia is the phone used by carpenters/mason/hell even a Kabdi ( Thats a Scrap dealer who comes every sunday on a cycle an offers to buy old bottles/newspapers etc)...
All SE needs to do is keep introducing good phones in the low end category...gradually prices of High end fall down..
Then a basic fact its always prized to see a few uncommon phones around...I don't think you would like seeing 5 people in front of you and 5 people behind you all with the same phone as you have..

yeah i think se have missed one helluva opportunity by not targeting the low end segment more aggressively.
well.. the figures speak for themselves.
the largest mobile phone brand in india is LG who make really cheap phones (sales something like 2000 odd crore rupees...US$ 400m,)
and then its nokia.. ( a little less compared to LG.. )
and i think SE is at the bottom... something like 80 crore (US$ 17m)
1 crore= 10 million

It is of my opinion that SE's customers tend to be a lot more clued up and 'Techie' than your average customer, and will pay extra for the additional features that accompany the high-end models that they design and produce so well.
This makes SE better placed to take advantage of emerging technologies.
Personally I can't understand why people buy nice phones then don't know how to take advantage of the handset's full potential.
They should be shot.

Here people dont wait for the prices of high end phones to come down. They simply dont need a phone with gprs and a video recorder. I am not saying se should stop concentrating on high end phones. But atleast for specific markets it should change its strategy.

The most obvious reason for targeting the high end is because those models have higher margins for profit than the lower end. They'll have to sell less phones to be as profitable. Its the same strategy that intel uses with the centrino chips. Yeah that and se users tend to be more tech savy.

One area which everyone didnt take note on SE situation is their financial situation.
This is only the 3rd quarter they get net profit. The total of those profit cannot even recover their initial lost.
My point is the company as a whole is still vunerable. Going for low end phone didn't mean the whole developement cycle will be easy as designer and programme manager will need to look for cost effective solution to make their phone works. Also with the huge volume for low end phone, they need to invest more and take greater risk...especially if one low end model don't sell.
Therefore I see tht it is logic they didn't produce as many low end phone for now. But I do look forward for a great low end phone from SE maybe by end of the year.
BTW even in Ericsson days....they are not really strong in low end phone as well. Normally they will introduce one and make it sell forever.
