i think that search function is horible.. it just "S**ks" i cant even findt my own posts with that search function
The other thing is that "SEARCH" thing. it was quit populare to say a few months ago. but i think the most veterans and also the people around 2-300 post counts have notice it.

For me itīs a combination of time since registred + amount of sensible posts.. Some people obviously seem compelled to reply just for the sake of replying while other seldom speak up, but when they do, itīs always good, relevant intelligent posts.
Those elite few are the true veterans IMO.

The OP was flamed immediately by I think 3 posters with the usual "use the search" lines, whereas they were wrong because the software discussed was brand new.
Fortunately some moderator came by (I suppose) and the flaming posts were removed.
I conclude 3 things:
1. The search is becoming less effective because of the huge amount of posts. Maybe a new system of categorising posts would help. Especially newbies can get lost and feel being treated unfair.
2. Some people can't handle the 'power' they get by being anonymous. It will always be like that since there is only a limited level of social control possible in forums like this. Any newbie on any forum should expect to come across this type of 'veterans' sooner or later.
3. There are moderators and they do their job. I especially appreciate that they just removed the inappropriate posts instead of putting oil on the fire and joining the discussion. I think the newbie in the mentioned post feels integrated now because other people stood up for him. That's what we all should do if necessary.
Edit: I re-read the post and the OP is not really a newbie, but, eh, well, could have been...

Again I donīt want to reopen that discussion, but that time the posters were (well-founded?) still upset and 'I was hoisted by my own petard'..

I think new members are put off by others, especially if they have some big news to post. If they see regulars getting flamed, the prospect of getting roasted by established members is hardly welcoming and no apology or manners is not good.

it's anybody posting something 'out of the box' really
People posting new apps, people posting their own content, people posting links, or (recently) people posting concept phones.
anybody can find him- or herself victim of the grand esato mob any day. Because anybody posting anything remotely revolutionary will find him- or herself flamed and discredited to no end.
And yet we wonder why this site has less 'news value'......

Esato does have a strong sense of community, but woe betide you if you want to become part of that, or if you disagree with a veteran! Certain members of the "old guard" have openly stated that they do not like new members posting. This i do not understand. Are they being openly hostile, or just curmudgeonly, and unwilling to put in the effort to make esato a better place? Either way, its wrong. I hate it when new members are flamed, for no reason other than they didnt use the (at best awkward to use, at worst unfathomable) search function, or over something petty and stupid, like spelling. Just because you have been here longer, doesnt make you better.
I'd also like to add that my "crusade" isnt exactly a crusade, but the slogan in my sig has certainly drawn attention to the problem, and made a few people think, which is exactly as it was intended to do. Of course, if i see obvious flaming of a new member for no good reason i will fly in, teeth bared! (sorry fetzi, but alls well that ends well mate
but remember, it wasnt just you, there was a few comments at the poor guy, at least you are standing up and doing something positive about it)

I don't think such a sweeping generalisation is at all accurate, hence why I differentiated between different types of veteran. There are some 'veterans' on Esato who do seem to get rather committed to an opinion, but if you look to the very old members then there is very little evidence of this behaviour amongst them.

As I said before, I do agree with the sentiment expressed here, but I prefer to do what I have always done; lead by example and only get involved if it is necessary. I prefer leaving direct intervention in such matters to those younger members who feel inclined to do so.
@all
I have previously suggested that the Rubbish Forum not be included in searches, that would go some way to improving the usefulness of this feature.
