I honestly dont see the fuzz and I really think its very few that would actually assign different sms tones for all their contacts. You allready have the ability to assign different ringtones and different pictureID's but I dont know a single person in real life that use these features on more than a single contact or two if they use it at all.
I dont beleive anybody really needs it, but simply want it because a friends samsung or nokia has it. I dont beleive anyone are so important that they constantly await an sms from someone else so important that they need a specialized sms tone to know they received an sms from that particular very important person, because they are so important that they dont have the 2 sec. to look at the sms and see who its from.

get a pXXX series, there is an application for sms tones per contact..

Not necessarily. i thought it was about the option of setting your own MP3 sound for alert, not attaching different alerts to different contacts
I'd be well pleased with the former actually... don't see the particular extra in the latter

IMO, it's much like having a different ringtone for a specific contact, that way you will already know whether to pause the movie you're watching or put down the book you're reading or not. If one person can't see the convenience in that, it doesn't necessarily mean it's totally pointless.

I dont think its totally pointless, and I do see the convenience
I just dont think its that big an issue that it needs surveys and pertitions to get it. If Im watching a movie or reading a book, I simply deside up front if Im available or not. I simply either turn of the phone if I dont want to be disturbed, or choose not to look at the sms untill after Im done. Just like when I go to the movies, I turn off my phone. It doesnt really matter who sends the sms, Im no slave of my mobile, and I dont feel compelled to keep it turned on or to instantly read any sms from any specific person. Its perfectly enough for me to hear the sms alert knowing an sms is waiting to be read, once I deside I have the time to do so.
I certainly dont mind if the possibility is there, and I dont mind if others feel they would like this, but personally I cant say I miss it that much, and I allways get a litle disturbed when someone (not pointing at anyone specifically) say they really need something like this and need to make surveys and pertitions to try and get it. I mean, we need air to breath, we need water to drink, we need food to eat, but we hardly really really need individual customisable sms alerts for all contacts in our mobiles
I think the ability to choose your own personalized mp3 for sms alert is more interesting than to be able to assign an individual alert for all contacts.

as far as i know, when you update the firmware of your phone thru their website, the sms customization was already included. Thanks!
