That's what I did. I got Nokia 7270 for EDGE since we don't have 3G here in the US and when we do finally get it, the frequency will be incompatible with Europe's 3G

What you all seem to be ignoring is the simple fact that SE are a relatively small manufacturer with a limited manufacturing base.
Europe and Japan are by far SE's most important markets and as such SE will devote the lion share of its resources to those two markets. With respect, India simply does not have the necessary economic conditions at the moment to make mass sales of high-end mobile phones feasible. Until recently India had fewer mobile phone users than the UK, never mind Europe!
Of all the Indian mobile customers, how many can afford to spend £200+ on a mobile phone? How many can afford to spend £400+? SE have very much concentrated upon the mid to high-end markets up until now, which unfortunatley don't lend themselves very well to poorer countries.
As SE grow and diversify their product base I am sure that we shall start seeing a greater range of handsets that are affordable in less well off countries.
SE really aren't a true global player, they are very much a regional manufacturer with emphasis placed upon Europe and Japan.

i think i might have a simply solution to this problem now bear with me its a little bit left of centre.
how about if you need edge and its very important then you buy and edge phone from a maker that sells them.
at the end of the day a phone should work for you not the company who make the profit from it.
so for those still following this if edge is available in your country and its a nice bridge for the next couple of years till any sort of 3g service is set up then buy an edge phone if thats what you need
i hope some peoples minds havent been blown away by that simple solution

The fact remains that even though most people can't afford high end phones as you said, even if a mere 5% of the mobile population in india can afford expensive handsets, even that makes it a huge number. Afaik, india is one of the fastest growing mobile market if not the fastest. And. We can easily get sub-150£ edge enabled phones. The nokia 3220 for example.

This is a catch22 situation...se wont make edge enabled sets coz they're small but if they dont they'll lose customers and will remain small. All they had to do was make k750 and w800 edge compatible...as mentioned earlier its a small hardware tweak without no big effects on phone's price. So what if europe doesnt need it...it would still greatly improve the phone's standing in the markets where edge exists.

It is abundantly obvious why SE does not offer support to EDGE, and the point has already been made several times in this thread:
If SonyEricsson believed that the extra revenue generated from the EDGE subscriber base would (substantially) outweigh the costs of servicing that market, obviously they would release EDGE handsets. Clearly, this is not the case. SE are focussing on the more mature mobile markets and, maybe more significantly, technologies which they believe will have a brighter future than EDGE (which we all know was only ever intended as a go-between for GPRS and UMTS, and therefore offers little value for investment!).
Evidently the US and Indian markets are not SE's priorities, for the simple business reason that greater profits lie elsewhere at the present time.
I would say it is fortunate (for those of us who would like to see SE have a successful future) that they take such decisions based on their own research rather than on the speculation of a few individuals who are biased by the fact that they suffer from not being catered for.
Harsh but true.

I think 3G will never be available to everybody the way GPRS is now, or for a very long time anyway. EDGE however is a relatively easy improvement to make over GPRS in terms of network structures and that's why it shouldn't be underestimated.
In my country for example, 3G is kinda like a thing for the big cities whereas EDGE covers the entire nation - just like GPRS - and is available to everybody.
