@Uncle Bob, yeah I have that same one too and the same movies play just as fine on my JAM. I use betaplayer to play them. actually I don't bother with movies, just lots of music videos. but I guess this is a bit off topic now

My COMPAQ Presario V2020AP complete with B/T dongle and wireless LAN.

Only computer I've ever owned, bought in March of this year.
We don't have heaps of space to put a desktop so I chose a laptop.
Use it every day and when I'm not, my wife and son are. Hasn't missed a beat yet. Love that widescreen. Would have bought a VIAO or IBM simply on reputation but the budget wouldn't stretch that far.

Just bought a Belkin wireless router to use at home. Awesome! Now I can use my broadband connection anywhere in the house. The wife approves because it gets all our cables off the floor and away from the kids. Cost NZ$99. Now my laptop is cable free and truly portable - I love it. Anyone else using WLAN at home, etc?

I've been using WLAN at home for about 5 years and have never looked back. The kids can carry their laptops from their bedrooms to their tv/living room and still be connected. I can use my laptop anywhere and even surf while on the loo or in the bath on my handheld

WLAN has become more important with brandband connections too since these routers make it so easy to share the connection

just be sure to put some simple WEP security key in there and change it once fortnight or so.

If you are in a residential area you are probably at little risk but you never know who might be watching

and once its all configured you should disable the sending of the SSID if your router supports that. All these things help to make it a little more secure

All great advice. Ive done all of the above and I have set static IP's to all the machines connected to the router, i have then only alowd these 3 ip's to connect making sure that nothing can get on my network.

Its great for playing counter strikie in the bath

I only added static IP to our HP printer/scanner/copier/fax thingy which has a network module in it so we can all share. The HP driver software gets upset when it can't find the device on the same IP address

you did remind me that most routers also support MAC address lists and its worth adding those in too for the devices that will connect to the router

the more security the better really. its not being paranoid but if the options are there then they might as well be used

I say the same to my wife about the steering lock we have in the car. she can't be bothered to put it on most of the time and so it sits on the passenger side floor. One day someone might well nick the car and there will be the steering lock on the floor! how ironic would that be!
