I wonder if MS finally cured the age old problem of you know what in Vista?

Interesting article on 'Vista' and 'Tiger' from eWeek here... a few quotes:

"When Windows Vista ships in late 2006, Windows will mimic many features of Apple's Tiger"

"With the first Vista beta, Microsoft seems to have taken many cues from Mac OS X with the user interface and features, right down to some of the terminology.

Even some of Vista's icons are amazingly similar to those in Tiger."

"In Vista, "My Documents" and "My Computer" are now "Computer" and "Documents," as they are in Mac OS X.

The search icon in the Vista beta is almost identical to Tiger's Spotlight icon, except that the magnifying glass turns the other way."

"Vista folder windows have a search-as-you-type search field, a feature that Mac OS X has had since Jaguar in 2002, but which became dramatically faster in Tiger with the Spotlight search engine."

"Vista also borrows Tiger's Smart folders, calling them Virtual Folders. This feature automatically creates shortcut files based on criteria set by the user and places them in a folder. (Tiger's Smart Folder does this with aliases.)"

Obviously I've missed out the features of Vista that Tiger doesn't have, but Mac users have been using Tiger for a few months already, whereas Vista won't be out for at least 15 months! And by then Mac OS X 10.5 'Leopard' will be out with even more features for Microsoft to copy in a few years time!!

Which could also be said to be an improvement of the indexing services already built into Xp as well.

Mind you OS idea stealing has been going on forever. If you've ever used AmigaDOS and BeOS, theres SO many things that BeOS shares with amigados its not funny. including particular file names if I remember early versions of beos right.

Vista will be available in all these different Versions:

Windows Starter 2007 (Previously Windows Vista Starter Edition). This version does not use the Vista branding because it will not include the Aero graphics display found in the Vista line of products, and will only ship in a 32-bit version.

Windows Vista Home Basic (and Home Basic N). A simple version of Windows Vista that is aimed at single PC homes. Windows Vista Home Basic is the baseline version of Windows Vista, and the version that all other product editions will build from. Home Basic N is aimed at the EU and will lack Windows Media Player.

Windows Vista Home Premium. Whole home entertainment and personal productivity throughout the home and on the go. As a true superset of Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium Edition will include everything from Home Basic, as well as Media Center and Media Center Extender functionality (including Cable Card support).

Windows Vista Business (and Business N) (Previously Windows Vista Professional Edition). Windows Vista Business is roughly analogous to XP Pro today. This version is aimed at business decision makers and IT managers and generalists. Business N is aimed at the EU and will lack Windows Media Player.

Windows Vista Enterprise. Optimized for the enterprise, this version will be a true superset of Windows Vista Pro Edition. It will also include unique features such as Virtual PC, the multi-language user interface (MUI), and the Secure Startup/full volume encryption security technologies ("Cornerstone"). There is no analogous XP version for this product.

Windows Vista Ultimate. The best operating system ever offered for a personal PC, optimized for the individual. Windows Vista Ultimate Edition is a superset of both Vista Home Premium and Vista Business, so it includes all of the features of both of those product versions, plus other features.

That's just ridiculous isn't it? I mentioned the 7 versions they'd proposed back in September and it looks like they haven't changed the line-up much since then!

I just don't understand why you need so many versions? There's one version of Mac OS X, that has all features, for all users, for all computers. Makes things so much simpler to manage, support, update, check for compatibiity etc.

@Jools

I agree, it is completely rediculous to have so many different versions but on the flip side, it could help smaller retailers and PC builders to become more competitive.

One of the things that really pushes the price of a PC system up is the bloody operating system, currently you're forced to use XP Home wich costs about £60 inc. VAT for the OEM version. Lots of 'average' home users don't even use half of the features that are built into XP Home so if Vista Basic is competitively priced, it could be ideal to bundle with low end systems.

Of course, we don't know how much Vista is going to cost yet, so whether or not this will actually be the case is yet to be seen. TBH I can't see Vista basic selling for much less than XP Home but at least we'll have the option to use the cheapest version rather a more expensive version that isn't really needed.

The Cynical side of me sees this as yet another M$ ploy to get more money out of businesses. By producing several versions with slightly varying feature sets, businesses will have to evaluate their current needs and get the version that allows them to do exactly what they do now. So there might be just one little feature that they need which forces them to pay, for example, £30 more per license for the next version up.

the reason MS changed the names of My Documents and My Computer is because many users of windows (who don't even know what my computer is called on a mac) have complained that it is patronising, childish and confusing.

Ever done a support call and you tell the customer to click on "my computer" and they say to you "but I can't see your computer, how am I supposed to click on it?"

If you have you'll know what I mean.

The "My" prefix is a blight on humanity. I'm glad they are getting rid of it.
