@ thanx duckling.

@all ppl is there a way to start up in ms dos mode if there is no operating system? The windows cd always run the setup and goes straight to installing. I need to get a boot screen but before installation. Dont know if its possible. I tried to use the win cd as a boot up disk to go to ms dos but there is no options like safe mode or anything if the os is not installed. I dont have a stiffy to create a boot up disk. This might be off topic sorry. I want to run the setup from the hdd in ms dos mode.

@chrisparov.. Bro ms dos is Microsoft Disk Oparating System, it is an operating system that was built by Bill Gates for the IBM computers in the late 80's and it was very popular by then, it stoped being used in the early 90's and was totaly replaced in 1995 when microsoft created windows 95. So bro tell me, What do u want to do with ms dos in 2010?

@ Mr s for some reason xp doesnt want to run on my 286. hehe. No i want to run a windows setup from a hdd. I was wondering if there is a way to get a command promt on a c: with no operating system on it. I dont want to run the setup from a cd. If i can boot up with the cd and somehow exit to command promt that would help. I cant make the hdd bootable with format /s because i dont want to lose the data on. U must think now why dont u just run the setup from the cd. Please dont ask me that. LoL. Is there a way to exit the setup and go to the command promt?

@chrisparov its not possible with a windows setup disk, you will have to create a live disk or find one already created, there's a lot out there just google or do research on how to create one its not difficult. Or just get any linux installation disk, it doubles as a live disk, you dont have to install the OS to use it, just boot from the disk.
