One quick question (just curious).

You are religious because you choosed to be or it's because familly ?

Like for me: I'm not batized because my parent's gave me the "chance" to choose my own religion later.

That's a pretty impressive feat Peter, memorising all of the Quran!

I like this thread, people are debating religion in an intelligent and rational way, no flaming - the way it should be!

true, this is how we should always chat about our faiths, no need to argue or war. Words can be very useful and benefitial, arguements don't solve anything.

and yes Sammy_boy, it took me 4 years of hard work to memorize the whole Quran, but today when i look back it has been worth it every step of the way. In any event or need in this life - i always refer to the Holy Quran and believe it or not it helps me in every way.

Good question Jim, well i was born into a Muslim family and thank Almighty God for this. If i weren't born a Muslim i would not have known what was right and wrong. My parents have never forced me into doing anything religious but i have seen them pray and worship the Almighty one and this inspired me to do research on this great religion.

Today when i hear the news and media talk about Islam in a very bad way and i feel very hurt by this because our religion does not preach what they mention in the media, the people doing all the terrible deeds call themselves muslims but do not act upon the teachings of the Quran which is a shame indeed.

So your guys religion is all about a point system?

Well, I wouldnt call that 'merciful'. Christianity is all about forgiveness, you dont earn points, goodness, badness, you are accepted for who you are. But there is reward in heaven i.e. the more good things you do the greater the reward, the greater connection with God. That is why i am not fond of being a muslim because i will never be perfect, and i dont want to strive for perfection, i want to be accepted who i am. I need mercy not earning points.

Chapter 40 Verses 64/65 state:

"It is (God) Allah Who has made for you the earth as a resting place, and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape- and made your shapes beautiful,- and has provided for you Sustenance, of things pure and good;- such is (God) Allah your Lord. So Glory to (God) Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!

He is the Living (One): There is no god but He: Call upon Him, giving Him sincere devotion. Praise be to (God) Allah, Lord of the Worlds!"

Chapter 40 Verses 67/68, Beautiful words from the Holy Quran state:

"It is He Who has created you from dust then from a sperm-drop, then from a leech-like clot; then does he get you out (into the light) as a child: then lets you (grow and) reach your age of full strength; then lets you become old,- though of you there are some who die before;- and lets you reach a Term appointed; in order that ye may learn wisdom.

It is He Who gives Life and Death; and when He decides upon an affair, He says to it, "Be", and it is"

Good-evening peterkay and all the others! This has become a model thread. This is how religious stuff should be discussed. @peterkay what are shia and sunni muslims? How are they different?

Evening Whizkidd, How's it going?

The division between Shia and Sunni dates back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad (saw), and the question of who was to take over the leadership of the Muslim nation. Sunni Muslims agree with the position taken by many of the Prophet's companions, that the new leader should be elected from among those capable of the job. This is what was done, and the Prophet Muhammad's close friend and advisor, Abu Bakr, became the first Caliph of the Islamic nation. The word "Sunni" in Arabic comes from a word meaning "one who follows the traditions of the Prophet."

On the other hand, some Muslims share the belief that leadership should have stayed within the Prophet's own family, among those specifically appointed by him, or among Imams appointed by God Himself.

The Shia Muslims believe that following the Prophet Muhammad's (saw) death, leadership should have passed directly to his cousin/son-in-law, Ali. Throughout history, Shia Muslims have not recognized the authority of elected Muslim leaders, choosing instead to follow a line of Imams which they believe have been appointed by the Prophet Muhammad or God Himself. The word "Shia" in Arabic means a group or supportive party of people. The commonly-known term is shortened from the historical "Shia-t-Ali," or "the Party of Ali." They are also known as followers of "Ahl-al-Bayt" or "People of the Household" (of the Prophet).

Either way, Shia or Sunni - we all believe that their is only one God and Prophet Muhammed (saw) is the final messenger. Small differences do occur in all religions but overall Muslims believe in the One God and the last prophet.

Hope it answers the question Whizkidd.

Thats interesting. But why the hatred amongst them. I've seen conflicts between shias and sunnis in iraq and pakistan take a violent turn.
