Any more news on UK release date? Anyone?

I think any rumoured release date would be extremely unreliable.

Hopefully sooner rather than later

A number of people I know have changed there minds on the Xperia and opted for the dark horse Omnia SGH-i900, Reading the reviews and checking out the videos this handset is quite impressive, I think I may get one too, only snag is the strange resolution,

@Humble

Yes its a very good phone. Lack of the ability to go into bootloader mode is putting me off though. I need to be able to go into bootloader mode .

The TouchPro is getting excellent reviews as well.

I haven't checked out the omnia, but I know I was quite impressed with the i780 I picked up recently. $700 for a wifi, hsdpa, qvga (actually 320x320) display, qvga video, 2mp cam 256/128MB memory, 400MHz processor etc. in an ultra thin formfactor. Okay I know it's not state of the art, but it's excellent value for money, compared to the $1000 plus that most other WM phones in the market.

And it's got all the basics and excellent performance, plus it's a very reliable performer. Also while it's only a 2MP non-af camera it's adequate - cameras are often the weak point of cheap WM handsets. And it's qvga mode is quite good.

Application support on the square screen is not an issue if you run realvga which changes the dpi from 96 to 128.

So I'm pretty impressed with Samsung WM efforts.

@max

Pity about the stupid samsung connectors though, they should have standardised them to conform with Mini or Micro USB standards. Hows the video playback performance on the i780? Its using the intel PXA310 processor if I'm not mistaken. Supposed to be more superior than the MSM7200 series processor video acceleration.

I agree, lack of standard usb mini port is let down.

Yep it uses PXA310, Video performance is excellent.

When you guys refer to "excellent video performance", are you speaking of things such as: game graphics or GUI transition effects or 3D--or are you speaking of video playback ?

Can you give some real-world examples ?

Thanks

Only video playback performance.

Eg: If the MSM7200 series stutters at VGA@25fps at 1200kbps the intel PXA310 wont. Now these are just values I've made up not based on any tests. But you get the idea, the intel can play higher bitrates hence you dont need to convert videos. The intel also supports DI@30fps H.264, I think DI is 718*something, dont know the exact resolution. While the MSM7200 supports theoretical WVGA @ 30fps H.263, this in itself is theoretical as tests on the Pro and Diamond have prooved playing videos above 700kbps sometimes causes it to stutter, but using CorePlayer should help quite a bit, you need to shell out 20USD though.

Not to worry though , I think I have put together a .cab that can boost performace by upto 12% in benchmarks for video playback for MSM series devices running WM6.1. But I've tested it only on QVGA screens hope it works on VGA as well. Also every time you need to watch a video using the fix you need to restart the phone, so its still a work in progress, thinking of contacting coreplayer to see if they can help me out with this. If it works out we can use the QTV bit of the hardware a bit more efficently and a video that was boderline watchable becomes watchable.

Real world out of the box performance on the X1 should be comparable to this http://forum.xda-developers.c[....]post.php?p=2533915&postcount=8 but not to worry, this is WM we can improve it quite a bit .

So what to make of SE stating that the X1 can play H.264 VGA @30fps at a bitrate of 2mbps ? That seems pretty respectable even if other devices may do better.

Depends on the encoding, if you checked out the link, mp4 works smooth but avi does'nt. Other devices play avi smoth as well. THe idea is that you have to throw any video format at it and it should play it back smooth. If you have to convert to any other format then you might as well convert to QVGA and play it back. People want to eliminate the converting stage completely. And just because SE claim it does it does'nt mean it will. It depends on the container they've used etc.

The weakset link the the X1 is the processor. Did you try out the game I sent you? The phone maybe suitable to you and many more, good for all of you. But some of us dead zone types want more for the kind of money SE are selling the phone at. Its all about requirement. You cant understand my requirement or any of the power users here, so its pointless in defending the X1, with me at least. I know what it does and its just not enough for late 2008
