Jah, agree fully. Bleeding-edge technology always demands patience from it's acolytes....

BUT se marketing / PR people really dropped the ball with this one.

One more view on this if you don't mind.

SE I think is run by designers, engineers and visionaries not by marketing people. This is why we get such unique wonderful products - again I refer to the M600, unique in so many ways (revolutionary keyboard, very very slim and small, etc). I think if SE were a marketing company they would be more like Microsoft...you choose do you want an engineering driven company or one driven by markteers!

Yes..SE is a very special company in introducing new technologies and products..
They need to comptete with the likes of Nokia and Samsung however..
To do that they need revenue..Revenue will not come by losing sales on your top product just because your marketing f.....up.

It is a circle I am afraid..
They intruduced the M600
far too early in terms of software readiness..and the P990 far too late in terms of competing effectively.

People now have te choice of N93, sme good megapixel Samsungs, not to mention the extremely capable HTC TYTM with which I have been playing around recently..

not to undermine your view but each dept. has it's people the designers are doing a good job so are the engineers and visionaries, it's the coders and marekting people who suck at their jobs, hence the large amount of bugs in most of their new phones at release as well as the marketing campaigns, marketing is not just putting pictures up and thinking of catchy slogans, it's knowing when to release a product to the public, how to advertise it... etc if sony ericsson had decent advertising it could easily be third in the world, the reason I'm not saying second or first is because it doesn't have the necessary funds at the moment to rival nokia or motorolla, if it was just sony that would be a different matter...

Yes..the greatness of a company is reflectedby how efficient it is at all levels and departments..

It would not have been so difficult to make an officila statement aboout the delay..People would have understood..
Perhaps SEfeel that allis nice and well now..Wel we should not give them a pat on the back for their lack of professisonalism..we should tell them that they need to improve..

After all we buy their good products..

@Avantis

if you look at SE's last quarter financial they are about 30% ahead of last year. Smartphones are a very small part of their revenue; yes they want to grow this area. I don't think the P990 is typical, look at massive sales of their Walkman and Cybershot product lines - a result of good maketing!

All companies can improve, infact we can all improve as well! And yes SE's public information and product positioning (timing, etc) could have been better. In the round I prefer a technology/engineering driven company but I acknowledge that unless SE improve in all areas they will never make it to the third slot.

Yes I suppose that they will be the first ones to admit that they have made grave errors here..Perhaps they have had huge internal problems over this as well..

We perhaps need to air out views as consumers and tel them our opinions hoping that they listen. It can only help them to get better..

As sealover said, "we want to give them our money and they dont want it!!"

Anyway, it is great to talk about this so democratically with you guys..

yep new tech is hard to impliment-but SE has had soo much time to come out with the goods and why set up targets if you are not going to meet them .SE set out a March release date which meant by that time pple should have been using the phone all problems ironed out but as we all now know production hadnt even started .If they think its a problem bringing out new stuff then they should set more realistic timetable to accommodate the problems they are going to encounter instead of leaving us to do all the guesswork(all the info applies to the p990 only)

Oh, I'd definitley go for the overhyped, overmarketed company, the one releasing bloated software that's riddled with viruses within days of use...

If we're drawing that comparison, se is definitely more similar to apple : producing a first rate product which creates a loyal fan base ( and not always deigning the same fans worthy of actually communicating with re new products..)

Anyway, I'm just glad the wait is almost over...with a P990i and a Mac at my side I'm sorted.
