For cameras is more effective.
Also cheaper because they dont need later to make all lenses with OIS.
Mirrorless with IBIS have 5 stops stabilization.
Even with lenses without OIS and no EIS, footage is more stable than phones.

On a phone would need just bit more XY axis space, the module would be thinner again.
I think I already asked them when I asked for eye AF, november /2018 I think.

RX100 does 24fps AF/AE with 21MP.
X1 does 10fps AF/AE with 12MP.
SD855 has way more power than Bionz X.
It even allows 4K60 HDR10 ....
Many of the their ILCM and Cybershot have older generation of Bionz chip.
That is weird , hope not on purpose.

CEO should force Alpha hand over everything they have to Mobile.
Soon, the only advantage of RX100 over phones will be true optical zoom.
IQ at wide end won't be much different.
Then pocket cameras die.

Any owner of 1 can tell me if its eye af is just human or animal eye too?

AF on Xperia is just for humans
Bionz X is a dedicated chip made for photography, isn't like a Snapdragon, is like compare a CPU with GPU. Doesn't work in the same way i doesn't have the same architecture. Bionz is way better for picture processing that any Snapdragon.

LestGoDigital:

New trademark, S-Cinetone, registered by Sony , not Sony Mobile (probably due new corp. structure), however in the details of the trademark it use on smartphones is possible

https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/sony-xperia-2-camera/

Definitely is the same name scheme as S-Log, S-Log2, S-Log3

there are news about 10x optical zoom for even next year.

40mpx 1/1,55 inch sensor with f1.4 produces 10mp photos may became a serious threat to rx100 series...

20 mp 1 inch sensor has 2.4 um pixels , if new 108 mpx sensor works just like 48mp ones it means (3*3)12, it'll be equal 12mp photo with 2.4 um pixel.

bionz could be better chip then snapdragon's spectra but i dont think it was created for small sensors.

i can bet rx100 series will have some serious competition with mobile phones in just two years.

Why did you use 3*3?

Btw, Bionz in mobile phones are just software right? Mabe they should make an actual bionz for mobile chip like visual core or something instead of aube.

Edit: I calculated the sensor size if this 108mp is real. It's 12mm diagonal (1/1.3") with 0.8 um. If they make it happen and with 3*3 it'd be normal Bayer right cuz when you have 9 pixels for 1?

S-Cinetone ... My guess is S-LOG
Maybe they decided to offer RAW video and this for post processing.
Would be killer feature...

Convencional CMOS is RGGB.
50% of green like our eyes.
But everyone says RGB because it is easier.

Quadbayer means 4 become 1.
It forms a 2x2 square of each colour.
So a 108MP would be 54 green - 27 red - 27 blue .
It works as 13,5 green - 6,75 red - 6,75 blue to end up as 27MP photo.

https://fscl01.fonpit.de/user[....]sizes-quad-bayer3-w810h462.jpg

Imx586 (mi9 ) vs imx363 (pixel 3)

Then you can make 50% pixels of long exposure and 50% of short exposure. To increase DR.
Sony Semicon announced a QB FF sensor that does 15MP. Maybe for the future A7S III.

Probably these QB will be very common in near future.

A phone will never match up to something like the RX series as a package. Dedicated hardware.
Phones don't have space for the quality of lenses used, especially when you have a zoom lens. Currently no phone on the market has a zoom lens. They have multiple prime lenses, a zoom is variable.
Hardware controls - dials, wheels etc.

It might get close in IQ but as a photography tool a phone will never have the same dedicated hardware. That's why companies have shifted to premium compact and mirrorless, those are the next step up from. A phone, offering features a phone can't.

@black few of those 1/2.3" cybershot have bionz x . Cyber-shot DSC-HX95 was released last year.

Yes. Exactly what I said.
The IQ gap is quickly fading away.
But zoom advantage will remain.
No phone will ever give usable photo at 200mm, 400mm or 600mm (like RX10) ...

Anyway, phones are eating another market.
I doubt Walkman and ipod will still exist after 2021, despite providing better audio quality than phones.

I dont know about the new RX100 VII , but previous generations had heat issues when recording 1080p.
Then you see phone like Xperia that can record 4K HDR for much longer time.
Video quality of flagships is very strong today for small sensors.

I know QB. Blackzeros said 3*3 instead of 2*2, so I wondered if s/he knew something or just thinking.

Btw apparently you need to multiply the inch type result with 16 to get the sensor diagonal in mm. Even this sometimes doesn't work but checks out for imx586.

I don't think they can fit a 1/1.3" sensor in a phone.

Diagonal is subjective.
For example imx220 and 300 are 7.87, but imx400 is 7.73mm. But all classified as 1/2.3" ....
1/1.5" could be 1/1.48" or 1/1.52" but described as 1/1.5".

Since these sensors are 4:3, you can calculate the 90 degree angle triangle.
4:3 triangle has side 5.
You multiply the bigger side for 1.25.

Nokia 808 was 12,4 x 6,02 x 1,39 using 1/1.2".
Nokia 1020 was 13,0 x 7,14 x 1,04 using 1/1.5" .
I dont know this if counts the cam bulge.

If phone makers do with 13mm + 1,6 mm bulge, might be possible.
But costumers could use it to demand giant battery like 6500 mAh.
Something they dont want to offer.

Xenon flash was something that took most of the space there.
