@artwales and brym!: The S700i like all other SE phones does have an OS...if it didn't explain to me how the phone would work? The latest platform by SE is the E100.

Here's a extract courtesy of Unofficial Club Sony Ericsson.

Quote:They state it loud and clear: "YESTERDAY we made mobile phones; we made mobile platforms for in-house use only. TODAY we DON'T make mobile phones, we make mobile platforms for everyone!" We are talking about Ericsson's Mobile Platforms "division". It has passed some time since some details about newer Ericsson Mobile Platforms were made public. These platforms are the base where the phones are built over.

Hope I've cleared up some of the confusion.

Finally got my Starcomms Internet connection sorted out. and the speed is amazing!

Sorry guys,but I have moved from MTN awoof to Starcomms awoof. I have 15 days of super-speed internet browsing for FREE. I even also got N1,000 free airtime in addition.

Just to add to what Brix25 has chipped in concerning phones having an OS or not: all phones have OSs, but regular phones just dont have the ability to install 3rd party applications like phones with Symbian, Windows, palm, and linux OSs do.

Usually, such phones are regarded as having "proprietory OS" (though I am not sure if that term is still strictly used that way any longer), meaning its OS is specific to the manufacturer.

For example, even the earliest smartphones had proprietory OS e.g. Ericsson R380, Motorola A008, and the more recent TelMe T919 series. you could not install any 3rd party applications on those phones.

While some of them were java-enabled (J2ME), J2ME is strictly not OS. it actually works separate from the phone's OS, so phones that are simply J2ME-enabled are still just proprietory OS devices.

@AYA, b4 u start rejoicing...
i read a story about starcomm credit eating fraud or something like that on the web so be watchful & don't go celebrating yet

@brix, i think artwales & brym meant OS like Symbian, Windows mobile or Linux & not manufacturer platforms else i'll start thinking the Nokia 3310 also has an OS too....

You didn't get it: yes; even the 3310 has an OS. Every phone has an OS. If they didn't, they would not function.

I may have to look that up for you. But I definitely use the default PPP settings. there should be an option to select default there.

@brix: I was referring to the fact that the S700 is not a smartphone ie no support for 3rd party apps and HTML browser. I recently joined the smartphone users and am enjoying the smartphone experience!!! Just thinking about all that dough wasted on T610, T630,K700 & K500( all bought at premium prices) makes me wanna ...

@brym!: You might also have noticed that a smartphone is a bit slower compared to your K700. You might also have noticed that you're more vulnerable to virus that are spread through BT unless you're using a Symbian UIQ device.

Opera Mini makes it possible to browse any website( sans Flash animation). Unless you'll use most of the functions supported by a smartphone you would've wasted your money.
