Yes, OEMs could offer 4K60 HDR but chose not to.
I think it may be due to larger amount of data, stress of hardware etc ...
It is a very heavy task.

1) According to post from Buks, they could be discussing the return of jack. A recent post he mentions 12MP 1/1.7".

2) i read yesterday a comment on a reddit topic, that sony is hiring people for xperia cam department.

LOL, I just left esato half minute ago, saw this and came back to post.
But it is done.
🤣

Someone said something like this here.
The weird thing is the fact this happens only to flagships.
10/10+/L3 were out for sale right after the event.

"To prevent leaks" .... LOL 😂😂

Usually we see device 2 or 3 days before the event.
This year's lineup was seen months before.

That's the dumbest thing I ever heard. They are killing their own hype this way. Also I don't believe it. They are delaying the production to reduce the costs. Components should cost less in time and sony is squeezing every penny they can.

Second flagships also arrived earlier. Does that mean they didn't give a fcuk because it's pretty much the same thing anyway?

If they have units to show off at event, this means all components were available at their factories already.
They made few units (none is prototypes) to take to event while more are being made.
Prices of components to drop that fast, otherwise they could keep most phones for second semester to increase profits.

Seems matter of choice to me.
To avoid other markets to have way before Japan.

i think capturing 8k@30 video then photos should be more easy, because bitrate is less lower then photo capture.
but probably there are other problems such as heat and storage speeds.

https://www.xda-developers.co[....]ps-video-recording-smartphone/

i'm sure we'll see 8k@30 fps video record in 2020, at least for chinese phones...

I suspect Sony might do this with some of their current new upcoming audio products as well. Lots of stuff was announced at IFA but it just went on sale now.

Sure that is one way to stop leaks but if your potential customer buys your competitor's products, the cost of stopping leaks can be quite high and devastating to profits.

Some of the pre-production devices could easily be made in Japan before actual full scale production starts. A lot of the devices shown at shows are not production models.

No phone will do 8K if cpu/cam dont allow it.
Unless fake 8K like nubia gaming phone.

Real 8K = SD865 being strong enough + 42MP native or 168MP quadbayer

We cant forget heat issues. Phones cant even handle 4K60 for more than few minutes.
Most do 4K30 at 40-48Mbps, few like Sony , Htc and OnePlus do above 50Mbps.
Those that do 4k60 , work at about 70Mbps.

For example Xperia 1 :

- 1080@30 = 17Mbps H264
- 4K@30 = 55 Mbps H264

Considering that 4K is 4 x FHD, and bitrate of video went up 3x.
So a 160Mbps could be possible. Maybe about 150 with H265.
Too much for hardware to handle.
Alpha does 100Mbps at 4K30 only and it is 8bit.

There are devices at event even used for reviews.

they are pre-production units, no way they buy the components and wait 3-6 months to use them, where do they even store them all? By the time X1 arrives other phones using the same chip get price cuts but X1 arrives with its original price intact. Also why did they wait until October/November for 5? It's the same phone essentially and it would have made more sense if it was released alongside X1. But they waited and still wanted 800 for it.

Fake or not 8K will arrive, maybe not next year maybe as fake 8K but once it's out, Sony and others will have no choice but follow. It doesn't make sense but 4K didn't once, and there are people still asking where is the content etc. Not to mention an 8K smartphone display is pretty far away. At least if 8K becomes a reality, other video downsampled from higher res would be a possibility which would actually be useful.

BTW you need 44236800 pixels 4:3 (7680 is the minimum width needed, divide it by 4, multiply that by 3 and you'd have height) with the same pixel pitch of imx400 you'd need 1/1.37" rgbg sensor.

Not saying 6months.
But of course they have all before the event.

You order all you need.
Make the prototypes.
After project is done, you make few more units to show at event and to give to tech sites.
They need hardware ready to work on software.
You can do with previous hardware.

They dont order just few units enough for prototypes, them more after event.
Remember that sometimes Sony has phones at CES?

When one phone is released, those companies were already working on lineup of next year.
They know what they are going to use, when they are going to have what they need etc ...

Sony does not have factory just for phones.
Maybe it is not priority there.
