Went into vodafone and they had a rumble through their system for me and they had the X1 launch date as October the 5th!
Not sure how reliable this is but I dont see why it wouldn't be either!?

^^ I can't help but think that the reason why they published an SDK for the panels is that their software developers were having hard time fixing issues associated with the xperia panels, what do you guys think?
but tbh this is amazing! will there be a reason to go for TouchFLO still?

i watched video and all I saw was this man talking the talk but there is so little shown on the phone demo. Dont SE has something more substantial to show for the panels since it is so close to release (or maybe it is not so close to release after all).

Yes practically speaking how many developers would like to program only for the X1 which will sell in such few numbers. A few large corporations might but very few induvidual developers will develop panels unless they own the phone.

But, just suppose, If future models in the Xperia range have a compatible panels interface, you would hopefully be able to port your own set of custom panels from device to device, making life simpler for oneself.
Possible?
I know absolutely nothing about the differences between Winmo 6.1 and Winmo 7, so i'm purely speculating that SE have a bigger dream that just X1, here.

Future models... that's assuming the rumours of SE splitting doesn't ultimately happen

The user base would still be far too less for too many developers to rush to program for the X1 or other X-series. And imo after watching the video the panels is quite a let down personally. Its just a qucik access to other windows apps, they have'nt even enlarged the start menu bar like on HTCs or the new Samsung Omnia. He still scrolled with the scroll bar which is so yesterday in the windows world. I hope this changes before release though.
The Indian chap actually blew the utility of the panels out of propotion. Its more like just shortcuts, fancy ones though.

The Panels I suppose are full WinMo applications, just with the added ability of being able to integrate as a Panels shortcut. That's neat and everything, but I'm not sure why you'd bother developing the ability to be a Panel on one phone when you can just release your app to the much wider WinMo community as a generic app that'll run on anything (including the X1). The X1 user can only have 9 live Panels at one time anyway, a good few of which are bound to be taken up by SE, so it's seems like a really limited market for anyone.
It'll be down to SE to make this a compelling proposition for developers, by selling this phone in very large numbers. I doubt that's possible at this stage, with it being squeezed by the Iphone, other WinMo phones, and Android on the horizon, but that's just my opinion. Personally, I'll be going from WinMo to an Iphone in a couple of months, and nothing about the X1 has made me think twice about that.

Do the Panels update in real time and if so can you set the refresh time ? or are they just static snapshots of predefined images ?
