The Z1 problem in Japan:

Sony Xperia Z1 (SO-01F):
 - Using MNP: JPY 0
 - Renewing a docomo contract: JPY 43,680
 - List price: JPY 89,040

Apple iphone 5s (16GB):
 - Using MNP: JPY 0
 - Renewing a docomo contract: JPY 0
 - List price: Could not find this option

So yes, for docomo clients, iphone 5s is 43,680 JPY cheaper than Xperia Z1...

I am at softbank, so will use MNP, and I dislike IOS7, so will take either the Z1 or previous generation Fujitsu (snapdragon 600 but 5.2" screen, 64GB rom and fingerprint sensor...)

I am back from another docomo shop.

I think the demonstration model had the bad screen...

Contrast and color washed out from 10 to 20 degrees from straight position...

The Fujitsu on snapdragon 600 had a much brighter screen and no noticeable difference at reasonable viewing angles

Same here.

The washout is noticeable at ~20°. The model number is 6902. Also, when looking at the top of screen at an angle I could notice light bleeding as reported by one of esato members. And size is too big for me. I will wait for Z1f, hope all these problems will be solved by the time it is available.

^ I think yours is definitely defective, on the third picture you posted light bleeding is noticeable even when looking straight on. The phone in the shop had this effect only when you look at an angle.

This effect is common in monitors, but IMO is not tolerable in phones.

Sorry to come back with the same question again, i did not find an answer yet.

Do Sony insiders know if Sony uses it's own plant in China, or if they outsource the manufacturing to foxconn?

I think that they must be outsourcing, given the problems we see.

Foxconn delivers consistent and high built qualiy for apple, but it seems they put less efforts into building Sony products.

Anyone with the answer please share.

In the beginning, I thought Z1 design is only a little improvement from Z, but my opinion changed when I hold the Z1. The improvement compared to xperia Z is huge. Xperia Z is beautiful but when holding the phone, I feel something lacking (maybe the sharp edge). Xperia Z1 is at another level. The phone is more beautiful than Z in every way and the best part is when you hold the phone. The metal frame, the round edges and the raised screen are well though and perfectly designed to give premium and comfortable feeling when holding. With Z1, I always want to hold the phone in my hand rather than keep in the pocket.

The display is again top notch (straight head on), personally the best display out there. Triluminous is nice. I love the triluminous display on Bravia, and now glad that I can have almost the same type of quality display on the phone. The phone is super bright. You will have no problem looking at the display under the bright sunlight. I switched on the auto brightness, and when outside in the bright day, I can see the phone clearly. Something that will never happened in other smartphone. The viewing angle degradation is very minimal. It is not totally washed out, only the colour degrade tiny bit. Not a problem at all. The display at an angle :-

The bezel is again one of the most practical bezel out there. You will realize how nice the bezel is, when you hold the phone. The bezel on Z1 is completely perfect. You will have no problem holding the phone in any orientation and in landscape mode, the bezel is perfectly made for your thumb to rest. You can hold the phone steadily even with one hand due to the bezel size. The design decision for the bezel size is good and practical.

The phone speed is very fast with totally lag free, the UI is nice and buttery smooth(IMO the best UI on android). The camera is good. The superior auto manage to produce decent image making it easier to take a quick photo without tweaking the setting.

Overall, Xperia Z1 is clearly the bestofsony smartphone and personally the best smartphone todate. Until this moment, I don't have any complain.

My score for the phone : 9.7/10

my short review on Xperia Z1

Edit:

The battery life is also much better than the Z. With the Z, normally, I will charge the phone every night, where the battery will reach around 14%. With Z1, the phone can last 1 and half day. The phone can last more than one day. This is with setting everything `ON' and all connectivity to `ON'. The Bluetooth is always on since I'm using Sony smartwatch, the GPS always ON, the wifi/3G always ON and the display is at auto brightness. By the way, this is with stamina mode ON (exception on Gmail and SMS). As usual, when it comes to battery life, Sony always perform.

@MyP910

Good to read. We'll see when I get mine.
Since I'm so happy with my Z that Z1 must be sooo cool.

could be my imagination but I am starting to think my screen is getting a yellow hue over time

I was gaming today and my phone got quite hot - is this a panel glue issue brought on by heat

hmmmmm
