Intel to make quad-core 64-bit ARM chip
On Tuesday, Altera announced that its Stratix 10 system-on-a-chip (SoC) will incorporate a "high-performance, quad-core 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 processor."
That chip will be manufactured for Altera by Intel on its most advanced 14-nanometer manufacturing process. Current Intel chips on the market, such as its Haswell processor, are made on a 22-nanometer process. Generally, the smaller the geometries, the more advanced the process.

You probably want to look to the Exynos 6 then, as this SoC is for industrial radios (crazy server routing and such).. the Exynos 6 is supposedly 14nm node as well but 4x4 (octa) A57.big/A53.LITTLE where CCI (hw limiting factor in the 5410 (S4), and corrected in the 5420(Note3) and the kernel (the cpu_freq tables specifically) will work, as well as a broader memory channel (up from 13GB/s)... sony also has the JDI arm that announced a 5.4" WQHD PixelEyes/WhiteMagic display.. so really we will see, as this year is a year where i dont see the market actors being in lock step this 1H refresh.. unlike this year where 1080p/SoC were standard (s600 1H/s800 2H), display res may change, some firms will miss the upgrade step and market some other aspect of the display because of the outcry of technophobes.. ('why, i cant see the pixels anymore...' crew). and the introduction of 64bit CPUs by samsung will beat qualcomm to the punch.. no timelines for new SoCs from them (Q) yet. S800 is a pre A15 architecture... so its a half step behind already, if samsung can get the Exynos 6 out it will be 1.5 generations ahead architecturally, and 1 version of the instruction set newer (huge improvements across the board), the people that understand this, will cook whatever device its in quickly, as the power would be similar to a workstation. which should be time for the pocket computer to diverge.. walk to your desk, and your monitor, mouse and keyboard all wake up.. connected to your phone as if it was a desktop.. these things are being viewed and engineered with such narrow vision, you can see them missing the boat which results with niche ideologies such as glass/gear..

I'd rather go with a SoC of a combination of Qualcomm's Krait CPU, Imagination Tech's PowerVR GPU and Samsung's memory.

What are the chances that the Z1 successor will have 64 bit processor? and is it true that 64 bit can be fully utilized only with 4 GB of RAM or more?

32 bit can't use more than 4GB (in reality, probably around 3.7) of RAM without ugly hack, but that doesn't mean 64-bit will utilizing RAM well. it really depends on programming style and requirement. otherwise, 64-bit will waste a huge portion of RAM

For now 64Bit is nothing but gimmick, what good is a hardware without software that would run on top of it? it'll take a little while before the devs start writing 64Bit apps for the PlayStore. Besides the 64Bit Android at its infancy will worsen the platform fragmentation. I'm no IT analyst but I think even if 64Bit chips start launching next year it'll take another year before the market is fully ready to embrace the new platform.

@amirprog, very low chance... while almost all SoC are working on 64bit, only Samsung will have it first... and Sony doesn't use Samsung SoC..
Sony uses Qualcomm and MediaTek now... Both are working already on 64bit chips, but my guess is that MediaTek might be the first as they just use the same ARM designs which is already ready and used ( Apple is already using a modified ARM design )...
For High-ends, only Qualcomm is where you need to look.. and I can't see any info on having a 1H14 release of any 64bit SoC from Qualcomm... they will have an improved Krait platform nothing more ( from the CPU side, GPU side will go higher to 400 series ), But I don't know anything about 2H14 for Qualcomm...
When Apple announced their A7 64bit SoC as the first 64bit mobile SoC, a Qualcomm guy said it's just a gimmick and useless... but after that another respond was better as you can read between the word that Qualcomm are already working on 64bit for a future products... but that should be another arch. than Krait...
For me, 64bit SoC is just something good if you need to keep your phone for 2+ years... and believe me Apple moved to 64bit not because they need now, but because they're preparing them selfs and the developers for a future product where they will need to go higher and higher ( in RAM and performance )... they want the transition be very easy and seamless...
For Android, moving to 64bit now is for high-end devices only where some devices are targeting 3GB+ of RAM and this is because of the nature of multitasking in Android ( that's why Android needs more RAM than iOS ).. so for 2014 we actually might start needing 64bit...
Apple need it now to make the transition in the future seamless and easy for developers and gurantee the compatibility on older devices in the future. imagine iPhone 7 you might have some apps that are 64bit only, then 64bit apps only will be able to work on iPhone 5S also...
Android needs it in 2014 because we need 4GB+ in high-end phones and tablets, I guess Android will have a native side by side apps feature like Samsung phones in a future update, maybe even Android 5.0 where the UI should have a major change ( the jump in the version number between 2 to 3 to 4 always faced a major UI and API change that forced a lot of apps to be rewritten for the new UI/API, and this is will happen again with Android 5.0 jumping from Android 4.x )
And currently the multitasking nature of Android is flying and needs more RAM, how about later when it have native side by side loading of apps ? but I hope manufacturers know this and ready everything to make the transition easy and fast... We don't want our latest 2013 flagships be incompatible with Android 5.0 because they have only 2GB of RAM !! or because they're 32bit SoC...

@Xajel
Nice explanation, apple and samsung battle each other on the top.
i think that sony will announce the next flagship as soon as possible so they have a good time frame to announce a 64 bit flagship before the end of 2014, if qualcomm will have one to supply them. i don't think that sony will announce the next flagship in April like some rumors say.

Sony CEO to kickoff CES 2014 with keynote speech
"Sony might not be displaying any more phones like the Xperia S and Xperia Z at CES. Earlier this year, we were told exclusively by a tipster that Sony will no longer present flagship phones at the show. This is apparently all part of the Japanese based manufacturer's campaign to prevent leaks by tightening up the rules on who can handle a prototype device."
Not sure about PA's "tipster", though.

What about Mobile World Congress? I'd be really surprised if they didn't show up there.
In a way it's good that they're taking steps to limit the amount of leaks, I supposed they do damage their marketing efforts.
But for our rumours thread, we'll just have to work harder at snooping around. However, it's nice when Sony does completely surprise us with a new Xperia. The Xperia V was a nice surprise, for instance.
