I do understand what you mean regarding Series 60 deployment, and I do agree that it could be a very successful strategy to target smartphones at other levels of the markey besides the high-end sector. However, my point is still valid, perhaps even more so. Many customers who do not buy high-end mobiles may not want naything more complicated than something, which has dedicated functions and can provide the features that the majority of customers want. This isn't to say that customers are not intereste din new technology, just that, invariably, customers prefer products, which are easy to use, involve little user input, provide good results, look good and are affordable.

3G and smartphones are not mutually exclusive as has already been demonstrated by Motorola, but my point was more regarding the fact that 3G is a relatively uncluttered field for the various manufacturers. All the main manufacturers have a fairly equal opportunity to dominate the 3G market and, in my opinion, smartphones won't play a crucial role in providing that dominance. If one looks, forexample, at current user trends in the UK, one would see that the popularity of Motorola's 3G smartphones, which was rather high in terms relative to the 3G market in the UK, has now fallen because the LG8110/20 has been released. The LG8110/20 is a non-smartphone without many of the features of even a mid-range GSM mobile e.g. Bluetooth, radio, internet access, but it has cornered the market because it provides users with what they want.

i do agree with u on this. Series60 is all this (and more). Like I said before, many buyers NOW only know it is a Nokia they bought (and only later be aware that it is a smartphone also).

on ur 3G point, true, consumer may not care whether it is smartphone or not. But u forgot one important aspect. 3G phone itself is very complex to build and a smartphone O/S (such as symbian) will make this process easier. That's why many 3G phones are using symbian (e.g. Fujitsu, Moto, Nokia). Ultimately, a 3G phone is already smartphone.

btw: i think everyone knows why LG 3G phone sell so well now. It is the only "down-to-earth" sized 3G/GSM phone. This will change when the next iteration of 3G phones come out such as the 6630 or the V800.

btw: LG has overtaken SE in volume sales in Q3 04. Maybe their success with the 3G phone contributed to this result.

Believe me guys i have used the latest se phones and i was really dissappointed as far as quality and java apps. The se are so slow no edge technology. I had the k700 and i thanked god that i got rid of it. Now i use the nokia 6230 and i am so happy with it. Fast internet nice camara video clips and amazing colors. EDGE isn't supported in many SE mobiles because large sectionsof their market don't use it.

I stand by my points regarding smartphones; I just don't see them playing as important a role as you do. Certainly mobile phones will gain more features and adapt to serve different purposes, but I still believe that the vast majority of mobile phones will continue to have manufacturer dictated features with little user modification for some time to come.

There has to be demand before any product will sell, I just don't see that there will ever be enough deman for smartphones in the near future to allow them to grow much beyond a subset of the market as a whole. One has to ask oneself if the average man in the street actually needs a mobile capable of reading documents; or that can display spreadsheets; or that can allow him to create presentations; or any of a number of other advanced features; the answer is of course no. Even businness users are saying that they don't always want every feature available; many don't want an inbuilt camera.

I believe that smartphones can only ever offer a serious challenge to ordinary mobiles when the the necessary service infrastructure is in place that will allow users to make use of more advanced features. At the moment sending a picture message isn't as quick as sending a text message; customers don't like that. Advanced features are all very well, but unless they are made extremely easy (and cheap) to use and have functionality beyond the boardroom then the average customer isn't going to be very interested in my opinion.

this topic provoked me enough to register so i could reply.
nokia uses plastic that gives their model "toy-look": transparent, colorful, flashing lights etc. so to me it looks like a xmas tree bought in china shop for USD 2.49. Also when you use it phone is not firm, its parts moves in your hand and make noises.
my t610 is of alu/quality plastic at the half price of 6600 which is not much better in performance and also HAS THAT LOW QUALITY LOOK.
that'd be enoug by far for me.

You raise a very important point, style. Of course style is a personal consideration, but I would tend to agree with you regarding the 'cheap' look of Nokia products. Before people accuse me of being biased in favour of SE I will admit that I am; I prefer SE to Nokia and style is one of the factors that caused me to change from Nokia to SE.
