@Arez, nice to see you post in this thread again my friend! I was really surprised that mobile phone theft happens in a comparatively prosperous country such as yours (Portugal). I wonder how exactly it happened with your K700i - was it snatched off your hand in the street?
@chax - Thanks, bud. But I really think anyone can snap the sort of pics I take. If you like the look of it shoot it.

United Nations Avenue. It was drizzling very lightly. The boy had been clinging to the lamppost, as if seeking comfort from it.

Hey Chili you could never take photos like that in the UK, not a chance!. It amazes me how you can get photos of people like that, over here you would run into problems with any age group you tried to photograph. Try taking a shot of kids and you would get yourself accused of being a paedophile (parents are banned from filming school sports days and plays for fear the shots will fall into the hands of paedophiles), try taking a shot of anyone older and you will most likely get a volley of abuse, that or worse.
We have seriously high rates of mobile theft also, and we're the fourth richest country in the world.

@cloysterpete5
Very true what your saying, I don't or couldn't go round taking pictures like chili does for the reasons you have mentioned. I have to say tho, chili has a good eye where a photo's concerned and takes full advantage of the environment he's in. This is where this thread comes into it's own. Pages and pages of photo's taken, from all over the world and in it some real beautifull shots
@chili, very nice buddy. nice lighting, the first shot with the lads in the doorway is great, the different materials, light plaster on the wall, metal sheeting an so on give this some added texture.
The second picture of the guy sat down is also very nice, with the plants in the background adding further depth.
The last picture of the young girl is also very good, she tends to stand out over whats going on in the background. She looks like she has a head on her shoulders much older than her years.
Nice one mate

@cloysterpete5 - Thanks for the feedback. One good thing about pic threads at Esato like this one, we get to have first-hand info about cultural attitudes that the media wouldn't normally find reason to write about. It is true that there are as many ways of looking at a photo as there are viewers.
I have to say that to be accused of being a pedophile by simply taking a photo of a child is quite a strange idea in the Philippines. I feel sad about the fact that Britons can't even take pictures of children in school sports days and plays. Here, if such pictures aren't taken, we feel that we missed an opportunity to preserve a special moment.
I understand that your society/government has taken the extra step to protect your children. It makes me very happy that we have not found the need for such prohibitions.
About mobile phone theft, what can I say? Some people do it out of poverty and desperation, but it is even more tragic when it's done for no good reason at all.
@marlonski - Thanks also for the positive feedback. Though all the things you mentioned weren't on my mind at all when I took those photos. Those were split-second decision shots and I didn't have time to consider the surroundings. All I was trying to do was bring out the essence of the moment and of the people in the photos.
Now that you've mentioned it, yes, the girl does have a "head older than the shoulders they're on." I'm happy that I was able to convey that without telling foreigners such as you why. A fellow Filipino would immediately understand: That girl is a street vendor, a seller of sampaguita (a very fragrant flower) beads. She doesn't go to school and works in the heat, dust, smoke and danger of the streets. Your daughters are blessed -- please bear that in mind.

Chili, there is crime everywhere my friend, rich or poor countries...
I had some fault in my k700īs disapearing - i let it fell from my jacket withou knowing, then someon caight it, and instead of giving it to me (i was close), he choosed not to return the phone and went away
I went to the police, and then asked my operator to block the imei, but i never heard of my beloved k700 since then
Oh well, at least that gave me an excuse to get a k750

(i payed 169 euros + 1200 points in my opertator optimus - it was a good deal)

It's a shame indeed that we have to worry that taking photos of children can be construed so badly. I grew up on a hippy commune - all kids ran around naked most of the time (you should see the family album, naked children and adults everywhere, all happy, all smiling). Pedophilia wasn't even an issue. The community was so open, and children so confident in themselves and their bodies, that if an adult made them feel uneasy they KNEW implicitly that they had the right to stop them or tell someone about it. It didn't happen often, because we were respected by adults in the community as Human Beings with rights and freewill.
But to be honest I came across many more cases of abuse once I moved to the city..and always involving family members or family friends (including a case in my own family - a city "friend" of the family who touched up a 13 yr old girl and told her not to say anything to anyone), never some stranger with a camera!

@chili....understand the shots were split second decisions buddy. The points i mentioned were just what i picked up from the photos. Anyone with a keen eye (like yourself) will take a shot that catches their eye, the fact that they had depth and for me were really nice for the reasons i mentioned.
with regards to the girl in the photo, i was going to mention at the time that my girls would not be allowed to roam the streets on their own at her age, even now ! But thats the society we live, diferent cultures and so on ( i think enough has been said on this subject)
Anyways... nobody posting ?? hope this thread is not getting too serious
Here's a couple of shots taken over the last couple of days....
these two from my garden
Iron Bridge...supposed to be haunted
I like a bit of colour too
