So, what's the verdict of our resident photographers?

No firmware update yet on my device, so can't comment on the quality. Don't even have much time yet to play with the camera on my Z1 either. Though, I have to say, the battery on the Z1 is excellent. I unplug my phone at 5AM and by the time I sleep, I still have 40+% of the battery left. My usage ranges from medium-heavy usage with browsing, auto sync on, and all sensor/radio turned on.
Somewhat offtopic:
Having a hard choice here, deciding between documenting my upcoming vacation to HK, Seoul, and Kansai with just my Z1 or the A7. Both have their pros & cons. So, not really sure what to do about this.

somewhere in Japan would be nice (but not Fukushima of course!)
but you maybe need to do some research and planner ahead

MNX - damn man! nice vacation.. and an A7 TOO!? geez.. first world problems right there.. Z1 or A7 haha

i would honestly go for the A7 to document your trip. It's gonna give you a better picture hands down. i think phone cameras are more for everyday stuff and impromptu pictures.. sure. Z1 camera is great and will get better i'm sure, but it will never be an dSLR. go with the A7 and you won't have any regrets. at least for me, it's not often i'd go to those places, and i don't want to risk getting a bad shot for a stupid reason when i KNOW i can get a great shot every time with my dSLR.

Today I couldnt resist anymore and joined the (still) exclusive Z1 club!
As it seems Im lost the lottery and got one of the more washed out units. Will check in the store again tomorrow and hope for a replacement. My old IPhone 4s is brighter on 50% display than the Z1 on 100%! Cant be right can it?
Apart from that it is a stunning device.
But still I cant help thinking, how can Sony be so ยง$&%($& stupid to deliver sub par displays on their flagship device YET AGAIN!!!!

@moogoo
The vacation budget was saved over 4 years,

. I'm actually forsaking my bike budget for the A7. Was actually torn between a new camera or a new bike. My current bike, the photo taken with my Z1, can last me another 2-3 years. So, I decided to not get new bike anytime soon.
Getting back to the Z1 and A7. During my vacations, that's actually how I learn to use my new cameras due to the constant different conditions and scenes. Due to the sheer amount of shots taken, this is how I get to know the new camera's characteristics. Now, this really brings me down to why I would want to choose either the Z1 or A7 to document this upcoming trip, not both. Don't want to turn this into a photography trip since I will be going with a friend that has absolutely no interest in photography can't make him wait. Also, have to pack light, actually using my hiking bag, due to the amount of places I have to visit within a short amount of time. The Z1 is actually more convenient(why I wished the Z1 had the initial rumor of 2/3 sensor size) versus having to lug around a camera bag. If I decide on the Z1, no need to buy the A7, or at least not immediately. Like you said, the A7 has the advantage of image quality. Though I'm not too worried about the Z1's performance because based on my current shots, it seems to be able to do what I want it to do for vacation purposes. Only bummer about it is the lack of physical controls, at least I finally got a physical shutter button after 4 years

.

@mnx - i'd still go with the A7 just cause it's less finicky than a phone's camera, no matter how good it is. with the A7, you might not be familiar with every nuance of its characteristics, but 9 times out of 10, you are gonna snap a clear photo with decent exposure and metering. you won't have that with the Z1 and you'll need a lot of time to really get used to its limitations. Going on a trip to Asia that you saved 4 years for is not the time to risk figuring out your Z1 camera. You want great shots fast and easy. Sure, it will be bigger and another thing to carry, but it'll be worth it in the end.
When i went to japan, i took my dSLR and had it hung around my neck and shoulders for shots any time i wanted it. it was a pain to have all the time, most definitely.. but i felt confident that the pictures I was taking were great and if they weren't perfect, a little photoshop on the raw file would make it so.
If it was just a road trip somewhere domestic, i'd say go for the Z1 for convenience.. but a trip that you took so long planning, personally, i wouldn't risk it.

@moogoo To me, this is a challenge to my photography skills and push me to think out of the box, if I stick with the Z1 that is. Anyway, still have my A7 on pre-ordered

. Will have this decided down the line. Still mulling over what lens to get since I will only carry one lens the entire time along with my spare battery and memory, nothing more, nothing less.
