My question is... are the 3G band support different between the two versions? if the X1i still supports american 3G then i'd rather get that .. why bother getting the X1a.

@Nimmyxhuynh:
The difference is the video recording.
X1a: records at QVGA(320x240)--24fps--no h.264
X1i: records at VGA(640x480)--30fps--h.264@15fps
also:
the supported
HSPA (3G) frequencies are different: X1i has a 900MHz band instead of an 850MHz band (X1a)
X1i: (900/1900/2100)
X1a: (850/1900/2100)
1900MHz is the prevalent 3G band for AT&T U.S. but they also use 850MHz in some places also (This is the risk of getting the X1i in the U.S.--you may lose 3G capability in parts of the country).
I believe the different processors dictate the differences in video, but, I don't think the processor affects which frequencies are supported. Someone correct if wrong.

You'll have to wait for the subsidized X1a from AT&T. Supposedly it'll be $499 this January.

I wish I was rich enough to buy both versions of the phone to utilize all 100% of the Xperia X1 capabilities. xD
T-Mobile uses 1700MHz right? if so, then the X1 can be used in the US under T-Mobile (as you can tell, I have T-Mobile).
but that sucks "X1a: records at QVGA(320x240)--24fps--no h.264"
Why the low screen size?

@mooboo, you can unlock a WM phone by paying the operator. Generally WM phones don't get a lot of branding and can easily be restored to vanila WM.
I'm a bit concerned about which X1 we will get in Australia. The UMTS network with substantially better covereage here than others (next g) operates on 850 - so we will have a choice of an X1 and normal coverage + VGA recording, or a "Next G" capable X1 with qvga recording!
Bugger!
