A smaller screen is not necessarily a bad thing and the difference in size is not that much really

the screens is not that much smaller, around 3mm shorter around 6mm less width

If you compare this device profile with z ultra (6.5mm) then this device looks to be about 7.5-8mm thin in my eyes.
could be because they want to get z2 camera sensor inside. it would not be possible with a 6.5mm device. look at this comparison between z2 and its camera sensor size:

i'm not ignoring the possibility of this being marketed as tablet with phone capabilities, but according to this pic i'm betting it will have the 20.7mp sensor with flash.

Yup I agree with u but if it doesn't have 20.7mp sensor with flash then it will be definitely thinner than Z ultra

You missed my point. it won't be thinner then or 6.5mm thin as z ultra, regardless of the camera sensor size. just measure closely z ultra dimensions with this pic dimensions. look at the power button size of each pic compared to each device profile. i just use my eyes. if someone has photoshop skills then it would be easier to measure. i don't.
