The issue with EIS is that it requires to capture a larger frame than the recorded one, so you need to capture a larger frame than 4K, then the EIS will stabilize the video by moving the actual recorded 4K frame over the captured one.
So you can imagine the stress with higher resolution & fps as for
4k@60Hz you will need to process larger frame than 4K at 60Hz. All this with the mobile SoC.
I'm just worried about how Sony Mobile will sell their newer devices worldwide that they're withdrawing from some markets. Especially the Middle East where I am from, While Evan Blass said they will close their operations here. Sony replied by "As part of our ongoing measures to drive profitable growth, we are carefully monitoring the market situation and reviewing our business feasibility in Middle East, Africa and Turkey."

I wonder, if they go with a higher resolution sensor like the 48MP one (or a Sony exclusive variant), would that give them enough pixels to work with to do 4K EIS?

4K is only 8.3MP already so any sensor that gives that (in 16:9 ratio) will be enough, in a 4:3 ratio sensor, this translates into just a little above 11MP, so 12MP sensor is enough.
From the sensor side, First 12MP won't be enough as you'll need more pixels in all sides and the EIS algorithm will select a centralized 4K frame to stabilize it (that's why EIS requires a crop factor in most times compared to non-EIS video). How much more than 12MP you need is up to the EIS and how strong the stabilizing algorithm requires for smooth and stable 4K frame. I don't know how much but I guess something like 13MP to 16MP sensor is okay with spare also (13MP will be okay for a shake that moves the scene by 256px in all directions). Also, the sensor must be able to send higher than 4K signal (so over 12MP or above) at 60Hz, Some older sensors can only handle
4K@60 as their bus bandwidth is not enough for anything higher.
From the SoC side, the ISP section of the SoC must be able to process the date of that 13~16MP@60Hz. Then uses its algorithm to select a stable and smooth 4K frame from the larger scene. The stabilizing algorithm works by "floating" that 4K frame and moving it with each frame using several still points marks that the algorithm thinks they should be not shaking. The ISP imaging data bus also must be able to handle the bandwidth required by such data the sensor sends.
Note that the "guess" I made by 13MP~16MP is just a lazy one as I estimated it based on a 4:3 sensor capturing a 16:9 4K frame, in reality, things are a little bit more complicated.

In my opinion the current best 4K EIS belongs to One Plus.
Steady Shot was the best until XZ.
Since XZ Premium, the other brands came with better ones.
Does the bitrate have any influence on EIS?
Sony and HTC always have higher values than other brands.
For example XZ records 56 Mbps, IPhone Xs barely pass 40..
Just curiosity.. Did X and X Performance ever get 4K after all Android updates?

I'm running the latest firmware on my X Performance and the highest resolution is Full HD 60fps

not really a leak, but I heard something a bit interesting.
Next year flagship xperia focus on game, more specifically "integration" with game.
I don't know how this exactly means but I remember someone here mentioned 2018 xperia would focus on "entertainment".
I'm thinking new gaming phone or integration with game console?

Well we know from recent events that Sony will not be at E3 next year, and that, plus other rumors have everyone thinking the PlayStation 5 is due out in early or late 2020.
Dunno what further integration we could expect next year unless it's PlayStation Now compatibility. But I'd think that would be on all Android and iOS devices.

Well Sony Mobile just recently released PlayJ App maybe that has something to do with strengthening "Entertainment":
