He lies or doesn't know what he's doing.
I have xzp and have watched 4k video with Google photos. No problem.

Let's clarify. Of course you can watch 4k content on google photo. The question is whether this is rendered in 4k, or whether it is rendered in full hd and then upscaled in 4k (the physical size of the screen), as was the case in all applications on the previous 4k sony phones, except albums and videos...

Yes you can but you but display doesn't go to 4K when you do. That's why I think X1II will do 4K all the time even for interface unless they worked it out with Google which I highly doubt or it's implemented deep down in OS as customization whenever 4K video is played to change the resolution to native.

It looks like X1 too used touchscreen controller from Samsung, based on those github docs. So its probably nothing more than newer and improved touchscreen with support for faster input refresh rate.

Whether or not it is native or upscaled, it's still 4K. I've tried watching the same 4K video in albums and in google photos and there is no difference. the point is, you can watch 4K and it displays in 4K. I am able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4K with my eye. Any of you can with a 4K device can try it. There is no difference playing a 4K video in albums vs. google photos. So whether it is natively supported or upscaled when played (which would be stupid if the original video is already 4K quality and is playing locally), it renders in 4K when you watch it. That's all that matters.

Is it true there's no more Album app? Is it confirmed? I like that app especially the pinch function to change the size of the photos in the gallery. I tried the pinch feature in Google Photos, it is not as smooth and fluidic like the album app.

For the same reason metadata in Music app is gone. Contract agreement with both Gracenote and Google has expired and they don't want to extend it in order to save money.
