Glad Sony isn't joining the resolution race. 720p is is still perfectly fine up to ~ 4.8" IMO. Average Joe though...

I assume you never had FullHD display, right? The difference is massive even in smaller screen. HTC One M7 has 4,7" FHD display in 2013 and neither Compact got close to the image quality and sharpness.

@penguino: Not extensively. Maybe my opinion would be different then too. But so far I just didn't have the the urge for a higher resolution.

With Average Joe I meant that it could be a disadvantage from a marketing point of view, if the person has standard or substandard knowledge and just compares datasheets. Though the Compact is still pretty much in a league of its own and long may it be so.

You may not feel the urge because overall HD is not bad. Thing is - FullHD is much better and for that reason alone it should be implemented in a flagship device.

Maybe Sony is going for differentiation? HD for the Compact, FHD for the main and QHD for the Ultra.

Main concern is battery life. 1080p screen contains more than double the pixels of a 720p screen, and will therefore consume about double the power. Given that the screen is usually the most battery intensive thing on a phone, you'll see massive gains in terms of battery performance.

I'd love a 4.7 inch 1080p screen, but if battery life is the main draw, Sony is absolutely right to maintain 720p.
Unless of course they can meet us halfway and have custom made 900p panels.

That's internet myth, resolution has almost nothing to do with battery life. Pixels don't consume any power. LCD display is backlit, power consumption depends on display's size and brightness.

And FHD in a midranger?

@Detox
Maybe, but why did sony choose 5.5" for this s70+ supposedly premium z5 version and not 5.7"-6"? i do not believe this is a z5 carrier variant (like z4v) because they never made carrier variants with different display size and it would hurt the the main flag identity and lock world consumers only to one size option (5.2"). if they have brains, it should be either a premium world variant of z5 or z5 ultra, just not a carrier variant.
