That's internet myth, resolution has almost nothing to do with battery life. Pixels don't consume any power. LCD display is backlit, power consumption depends on display's size and brightness.

Maybe Sony is going for differentiation? HD for the Compact, FHD for the main and QHD for the Ultra.

And FHD in a midranger?

higher resolution means you need more power for drawing , higher demans for gpu and cpu it causes higher power consumption.

@penguino
There are midrangers with better spec then the flag devices. for example, c series front camera is better then z flag front camera. they must have a list of priorities for each device including flag devices so we can assume that they see 1080p a low priority for the compact series as of now and maybe this also due to s810. also, even if m5 has 1080p and the next compact has 720p the next compact should have much better overall spec. it is a matter of looking at the big picture. with that said, i do think that 1080p should have been higher on their list for the next compact, but maybe that would mean axing other feature. who knows.

M5 has FHD screen but does not have fingerprint sensor. So 720p is not really that bad and there will be no phone in the market that can compete with the Z5C, at least for now.

Sony moves in mysterious ways, it is difficult to find logic here .

No, there aren't. Some midragners have better single functionalities (like selfie camera) while flagships should have top spec in a few core areas: display, processor, memory, camera, build quality. Altogether.

Good display in one of the core features, fingerprint sensor isn't. In a flagship 720p display is bad. It's really, really bad.

If they can make a 3-day battery out of 720p then all hail to Sony. Also, it's not about pixels and backlit, it's the work of both the display and processor that drains the battery. We all know very well who's the current champion in the upper segment when it comes to battery life.

The additional drain from the processor is neigligible. You may get 10 min better screen-on-time at most, probably less.

Probably but in my experience, frequent heating drains the battery extensively. Besides brightness levels, the heat consumes a lot of energy or when it heats up (using too much power) = battery drain

each pixels consists of transistor. So, higher resolutions mean more transistors need to be switched ON and OFF hence consume more power.
