looks like kerala had some long place names in the past:

Ernakulam - Erayanarkulam
Thrissur - Trishivaperur.

not much, from wiki: The word Ernakulam was drawn from a Tamil word Erayanarkulam means abode of Lord Shiva.

because tamil used to be spoken in kerala; then the brahmins north came down and spoke sanskrit, so malayalam is a mix of both.

yes the original language was tamil. In fact, the language spoken by brahmins especially iyers and iyengars in tamil nadu sounds a lot like malayalam.

Also, get this, it is easier for malayalees to understand tamil, but not so for the tamilians malayalam.

BTW, the tamil spoken in tamil nadu today is not the tamil that was spoken way back when.
