Ah right, she aint gone for good? Why dont you just go to the council and tell them you need a place, you been thrown out or some shit, say your staying at a friends but you can only stay for a couple of weeks, they will sort you out with a wee flat.

thats where the council sticks all them ,.. great idea huh just bunch all the looney and no hope'rs together duuuh old bill are up there all the time.

Well, I'm single, no children, and the Council gave me a nice one-bedroom flat on a low-level estate with lots of greens and trees. It's quiet, no through traffic. About 3 minutes walk to tube and bus. 4 minutes to shopping centre. Me well happy. You might be lucky, too.
