@k4m!k4ze
Athlon FX processors have more cache memory and generally run at higher clock speeds than the Athlon X2 range. It's roughly similar to the difference between Athlon 64 and Sempron processors.
As for whether FX and X2 processors perform better than Core Duo, How long is a piece of string?

It depends on what you're doing with it. The general consensus remians the same as it does for comparable single-core Intel and AMD chips, AMD is better for gaming whilst Intel is better for heavy processing work such as audio / video and CGI rendering.
But that might well change...

how can you say that amd is better for gaming when there is conroe

Hehehe
As I said, the GENERAL consensus is that etc. etc.
Personally, I don't find benchmarking to be of much value these days. All of the high end Intel and AMD chips are more than capable of doing what one needs them to do very well indeed. An extra 2 frames per second in a game or 2 seconds quicker on a heavy processing task doesn't make the slightest bit of difference in real world personal computing. Yet often, they are the kind of margins you get when benchmarking so-called equivalent rival products.

Oops.. I said socket 939/940 instead of the AM2!
@cycovision, the general consensus is that the conroe architecture is better than that of Amds current AM2 offerings.. Anyway, as you said this wouldn't be much evident unless you're an avid gamer or the next spielberg..

may be you want to check
this as well..

Hmmm, I've read about conroe in the past but wasn't too taken in by it at the time, looks like I should have been
Thanks for the info!

Intel did their homework well this time...

There's another article on the same site with various benchmarking results. In almost all tests, conroe easily has atleast a 20% lead!

The fact is, even the mid to low end conroes manage to nudge top of the line X2s to oblivion.. Suddenly the Pentium D seems so outdated! AMD, as of now does not have anything on the anvil to better the conroe... Unfortunately.

maybe shyam can expound further tomorrow..
