My guess is that odd thing in the corner is a lanyard strap hole just like on the Xperia Z. It just looks kinda odd.

It makes perfect sense. I've had the lanyard on my tablet S since day one and it's save my tablet many, MANY times from crashing to the ground. Especially since the current tabs don't have the folded magazine design for better grip, something like a lanyard is essential IMO, even if it is now lighter.
BTW, if it were a stylus you would have expected them to make a lot of noise about it, but there isn't a single peep about such a feature.
