Well yes, a few of them, arguably. The Touch Pro is near identical (the exact same processor, only slightly less ram) but adds an acceleromotor and TV-out. The Omnia has a better processor, arguably, as does the Iphone. These are all in the shops now, not still waiting for release like the X1.

The HTC Touch HD looks set for release very soon, and combines everything from the Touch Pro/X1, minus the keyboard, but plus probably the best screen ever seen on a phone, a 3.8" 800x600 panel.

It's all the other things that worry me. Battery performance, performance in terms of speed and stability and last but not least SE support for this phone (we all know there was next to none for p990).

no tv out, only 3MP camera, vga 30fps video in 3gp only, only 3.6Mbps HSDPA. A few other things also, that some handsets already have. There are more comprehensive WM's coming out than the X1.

how many different clocks can one phone need??

I get what you are saying, but just because the marketing gurus fail to find anything more exciting than clocks to tempt us with doesn't necessarily mean their can't be truly useful panels.

I like the it a lot better concept imho than the htc touchflo. I've been using touchflo for a few days and it still needs a lot of tweaking (for usability) and is little more than a today screen replacement visually, but it DOES provide much better finger touch control than a WM device without anykind of touch interface.

If Xperia improves on that then it's got potential. Most end users will care about the overall user experience more than the specifications. If it doesn't have the best camera or the fastest hsdpa or the fastest processor won't matter that much if it is a joy to use (otherwise why the success of the iPhone?)

I'm keen to see xperia in the flesh and actually try it out for myself. If I can use panels for most daily operations (I don't mind using WM for file operations or other down and dirty configuration kind of stuff) and they're seemless and fast enough to be used efficiently, then I think it has a lot of potential.

However if you have to disable panels just to have a usable system (aka an old laptop with vista installed and aero turned off), then the X1 is not going to be very good value for money. I do like the hardware design (style and ergonomics), but the low spec would put me off if it wasn't for the potential of the xperia UI.

Hi max_wedge, I was interested with your point about the Iphone, Yesterday I spoke to three friends in Sweden (All ex Sony Ericsson stalwarts and I was trying to see if I can get a better price on the X1 in Sweden) all of whom I discovered have recently moved to the Iphone 3g. Yet six weeks after the initial "Its Apple It's Cool" hype wore off all are now questioning their sanity in making the purchase!!
They all had the same gripe list

They don’t like the Camera
They don’t like no MMS
They don’t like no A2DP Bluetooth and lack of compatibility with other devices
They hate the browser and its lack of flash so now they cant get certain sites
They are not that keen on the lack of feedback through the screen!
They don’t like the poor battery life and they can’t now just slot a new one as they did before!
They don’t like no cut and paste
They hate the cost of running the damn thing

So is it really the case that people are not that bothered about specs of a device or is it a case of they are just getting caught up in the typical Apple hype and the “Eye Candy” aspect of the device? I have said many times the Ipod and Iphone are a triumph of "marketing over function" and I stand by that.

But all this then started me thinking and to question my own interest in the X1!

Am I just getting caught up in "marketing Hype"? Especially after wasting my time sitting through the lousy Sony Ericsson web cast yesterday.

And when I see so many posts referring to "Mediocre performance" from WinMo devices in general. I am starting to ask myself is this actually something new? Or am I in danger of making a substantial investment of cash in yet another performance sapping shell around an OS that is inherently slow and out of date anyway?

I am going to remember the experiences of Lars, Gordon and Leif and wait and see what people are saying about this thing six weeks after they have invested before I make my final decision I am no longer so sure.

fair enough cnet are wrong then. I double-checked gsmarena and they say 7.2.

I'm not saying x1 is any sort of slouch, but it's not the best available either. But don't get me wrong anyway I like the X1, and it's spec would be enough for me but if I could get another WM with better camera I might go that way. On the other hand if the xperia interface is as good, or even half as good, as the hype, then that could be a deciding factor in favour of the x1.

So I'm still open minded, atleast until I can get a play of the thing.

Obviously we have a different understanding of what outdated means. For me it sure does not mean that every single specification has to better than anything else. If that is the case we do not have a decent phone on the market today, they are all outdated.

HSDPA is 7.2 Mbps, by the way.

No, I wasn't implying that the X1 is the best smartphone out there, just a correction on your post. Anyway, I'm looking forward to an X4 or X6 with the new OS from the Symbian Foundation.
