it is kind of frustrating that there hasn't been consistent or official information in this regard. I can't remember where or who said 1.6 limited colors to 65K. I can't seem to find it on the android developer site that such a limitation exists.

In either case, it would be nice if someone with an actual credible title from SE could confirm one way or the other to put this issue to rest.

Personally, it's not stopping me from wanting one. No one has complained of the screen and instead, all i've read is praise praise praise. Look forward to holding it in my hands....

I found it! I had some doubts too, like Jakester2000, but I found a sort of official announcement by

http://blogs.sonyericsson.com[....]h-candidates-have-been-chosen/

It's in the PS.
I know someone mentioned that there has been giving contradictionary info, but this should be one of the latest comments on the issue.

We only have to waite for the update.

Do you think swype will be in the next update?
I read they have Samsung as a partner, but the x10 would be the perfect phone for having swype, being able to control the phone with one hand
Yes, I think it is a 'pro', not having MT!

@phone4video: that's nothing new. Like I already said: Question still remains though: why are X10 mini and X10 mini pro advertised with 16M colors while X10 only with 64k colors? They both have same OS (Android 1.6). Nobody from SE answered on this.

Also, they are not promising 16M colors for X10 after update. They only say "it's not visible for them right now".

I can't help but think it would be odd for a screen manufacturer to produce a 65k colour screen for a top end smartphone in 2009/10. In 2004 my K700 had 65k colours, in 2005 my W800 had 256k and in 2008 my W960 had 256k.

Why would a phone designed for media and produced so long after the K700 take such a backwards step unless this was just a software issue? Im still hoping for 16m since it just doesn't seem logical otherwise.

Regarding the screen, I got contradictory info over the last few days from Sony themselves. First, in response to this tweet, I got the following reply:

16m colors, no. 65,000 colors (I counted myself) - yes mineral glass

But then yesterday I got the following email from from the Sony Ericsson Contact Center, which repeats Sumit's blog post:

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Online Support.

In regards to your first question, the Xperia™ X10, X10 mini, X10 mini pro all support 16M colors, hardware wise. Software wise there are limitations from the OS and what the future upgrades will imply on leveraging screen capability is not visible to me at this point. And yes the screen on the X10 is made of mineral glass.

Since my initial Tweet didn't specify that I realized Android 1.6 was limited in color depth, it's possible that the responder missed that I was asking specifically about the hardware capabilities. I agree that it'd be really strange to have a 16-bit screen on the X10, as even cheap LCDs tend to use 18-bit (256K) color these days, but after Sony's decision to cheap out on multi-touch capability I won't put anything past them.

We need someone to create a 2.1 ROM for the X10 so we can find out for sure!

My sentiments exactly. If the OS allowed 16M colours then SE for sure would implement it.

I'm not in the least bit worried. There have been no complaints so far and I'm positive the screen upgrade will come along with the OS upgrade.

My phone comes on Monday.

Just a matter of time before this happens. I'm keeping an eye on XDA-Developers for the same reasons.

X10 evokes good response in Jap,
50000 pre-orders, reasonable queue spotted in Akihabara,
"atleast strong initial sales expected" -- predicts some analyst..

@goldenface the only risk is that SE had no intention of upgrading to 2.1. Thus a 65k screen would make sense since the os would be the limiting factor. It does seem like SE were forced into the upgrade. That would still leave a question mark over the mini tho. meh still lookin forward to gettin my phone tho

@jakester2000

Well following on from a chat I had much earlier on in this thread with Anders260, he was guessing that any OS upgrade would depend on the success of the X10 and that SE would like to make OS updates regular. So by that token the screen would have to be 16M ready regardless. I'd say an OS update is very likely.

Can't believe my phone is arriving Monday - it feels like I've been waiting hundreds of years.
