Now time for a real brain teaser

You had 100 bars of gold on a truck that you wanted moved to your warehouse. Each bar weighed a pound. You hired ten people to carry the gold into your warehouse. They carried ten bars each, one bar at a time and created their own stack in the warehouse.
One of them turned out to be a thief. That person shaved an ounce off of each bar he carried.

Now, you have a scale that you can use just once. How do you figure out who stole the gold?

Let us see who is the really brainy guy/gal here.

OOPS!!! 786KBR, I should have said that the loss of weight is not visible you have to weigh it to find it out

So you put five bricks, one from each stack, on each side of the scale. Obviousely you can tell wich side is lighter. Take one brick off each side repeat till scales balance which means the brick you just took off the light side was the one or you'll have only one brick left in each side and you have the light one.

Mustafabay each of that will be considered a different weighing so you have weighed quite a lot of time now.

May be this info will help you to solve this. You actually have a scale which shows you the wheights of the object you are weighing. It is not a 'balance' that you have but a scale. I don't know whether I have confused you

Oh a scale not a balance. And why would that be more than one usage? I put everything on at once, just took the bricks off gradually. But I guess that doesn't solve the problem.

Mustafabay it is because on a scale you get a differnet reading every time you take a piece away so it is considered a different weighing.

Arrgh. I was talking about when using the balance it should count as one time usage.

As for the scale I currently have no idea.
Only one usage seems like a try your luck situation.

Couldn't you just look at the bricksI'm sure you could just tell which bricks are scraped.Note I'm just testinf with the color and have no idea what is actually going to appear.

I know this one,

You take 1 from the first pack
2 from the second
3 from the third and so on.

It should be 100 Pounds,

If its missing 3 ounces, then the third pile was stolen from. If its missing 4 ounces, then its the fourth. Etc.

Yup the idea is correct but it should only total to 55 lbs. 1 from the first pile, 2 from the second pile, 3 from the 3rd pile, and so on until 10 from the 10th pile which totals to 55 bars.

You could also use the same idea but stop at the 9th pile. It should total to only 45 lbs this way. If it's missing 4 oz. then the 4th pile is scraped, if it's missing 7 oz. then the 7th pile is scraped. But if it is exactly 45 lbs then the 10th pile is scraped.
