Based on the text of the press kit, the Bionz seems to be hardware versus software like we thought. The funny thing is, if you look at the tear down, you don't seem to see a dedicated chip for it. Anyone wants to confirm this? Also, are we ever going to get that rumoured new JPEG engine/algorithm?

@ MNX1024
about the 10 bit mkv support, yup afaik s800 does not have hardware support for 10 bit encoded files which is not a surprise since even desktop computers with dedicated video card themselves do not have hardware support for it too. So we're all stuck to software decoding.
and it's because 10 bit is not really a mainstream format, quite the special format for us who likes to watch anime

and encoders choose 10 bit for the best possible quality for our anime and smaller size too.
It's nice to know the s800 can handle it though through software mode.

That's what I am thinking since I started reading the PDF. Well, it's whether where do you believe, on PR or tech teardown.

Oh so that is just PR after all?
I think anyway what is important is that it works, but really they should get their marketing fixed.

Well the release states this
Finally, Xperia Z1 is our first smartphone to use BIONZ for mobile – this is built on the same technology that powers the Sony Alpha digital SLR range and replaces the use of the smartphone’s main processor with one that is dedicated to photography, producing far better white balance calculations, reducing image noise and increasing the image quality.
But then, no dedicated chip was found in the teardown? Unless not all the chips were identified in the teardown, and ifixit hasn't done a teardown yet. Although if there was a processor, wouldn't Sony have on the board with the BIONZ branding?
btw what are the possibilities that Sony will add more manual control to the z1? as in exposure length, and being able to select different iso?

^ You can at the minute set the ISO levels in manual controls and someone mentioned a page or 2 back on how we will be able to control the shutter speed in a future update but when that will be I don't know hopefully it will be with the 4.3 update or even KitKat.

Well, that press release information does create some excitement! but I have my doubts.
1) as others have said, we haven't seen a BionZ branded chip in a teardown .. yet. Whether that's cause the teardown that exists doesn't highlight it or it simply doesn't exist or it's not branded (doubtful) is unknown.
2) PR is PR.. they twist and puff words to make things sound greater than they may be in reality. Also, it wouldn't be the first time Sony has talked about or demoed features that didn't make it to the final product (e.g., smartwatch 2). The proof is in the pudding, as they say. I won't get my hopes up until it's on my phone.
3) You would think if these things were all true, they would be highlighted much more in marketing. Especially the full manual with shutter speed, etc coming. These are things photo-centric users want to see.
4) Maybe these updates are for the 4.3 push or maybe even kitkat for some reason.

they BOINZ engine might be the same software/algorithm from the camera line up but process by the S800 soc. I don't know anything about camera hardware, but I don't think they have high end mobile processor in them, everything is running on a dedicated chip? S800 might be powerful and enough to preform/process what the dedicated boinz chip found in the camera line up? And yes, the Z1 camera software at its current stage is seriously lacking, need a major update. Like it doesn't even have 13MP and 18 MP shooting mode. The phone is also capable of 1080p 60fps but you have to use a 3rd party app. They need 4K video recording also. Note 3 4k downsample to 1080p proofs that watching 4K vid on 1080p, makes a huge difference.

gitaroo - if the PR stuff is to true, then Z1 has a dedicated chip distinct from the S800, which would mean it is more than a software processing engine. stand alone cameras do have a dedicated bionz image processing chip. you can see them easily if you search for camera teardowns. the chip is branded with BIONZ.
the camera software is not that bad. We just expect a lot more. I was using my friend's S4 camera this past weekend and I was shocked at how lacking it was! The options were so limited. Although, I agree there could be more options in the camera software as well as more features. Perhaps Sony is waiting for 4.3? We'll see
@all - i'm gonna try to see if i can get sony xperia on twitter to confirm/deny the info in the PR. though, they will probably just ignore me

Then the BOINZ processing is most likely being handle by the S800, its GPU is probably powerful enough to do what a dedicated BOINZ chip can do. Yeah, 4.3 update is suppose to coming out soon-ish, like in Nov according to ZOMG irc. Yeah come on 4k video recording! Hopefully it record in H 265 format too. Been playing with the camera for a week now still havent figure out how to take good low light photo.
