You don't need a tripod as long as you keep your phone relatively still - a small amount of movement does not matter as a number of HDR programs can automatically align your photos for you.
Look
here for short reviews of a good number of HDR programs for windows - most of which have the facility to align images

I keep the camera still by supporting it against other solid objects, like a corner of a window.
